Manchester United's first match under Fletcher took place at Turf Moor. |
According to sources from BBC , Fletcher will quickly switch the team from the three-defender formation (primarily 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1) that Amorim has persistently used for over a year to a traditional four-defender formation, specifically a 4-3-3 with three central midfielders and three forwards up front.
This is also the view of Director of Football Jason Wilcox, who has clashed with Amorim on formations and tactics recently. Amorim's three-defender system has been highly controversial, although he has occasionally adjusted to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 in some matches towards the end of 2025.
According to The Times , Amorim was reluctant to switch to a four-man defense when Director of Football Jason Wilcox intervened, stating that the three-man system was not entirely suitable for the current formation, leading to inconsistent results and their sixth-place position in the league table.
Fletcher, who currently manages Manchester United's U18 team, has consistently used a four-man defense since becoming a coach. Fletcher also favors a fast-paced, attacking style of play, inspired by the Sir Alex Ferguson era with its sharp counter-attacks.
Fletcher once said, "Fast-paced attacks, that's what real Manchester United is all about." Many Red Devils fans believe this change will bring immediate positive results to the current squad.
