Apple introduced the MacBook Neo last week with a starting price of $599 , the lowest in Mac history. Immediately, this product caused a sensation throughout the global PC industry.
In a recent financial reporting conference call, ASUS Chief Financial Officer Nick Wu frankly acknowledged the influence of Apple's affordable computer line.
"Apple has always priced its products in the premium segment. Their launch of such a low-priced product is clearly a shock to the entire market," said Mr. Wu.
ASUS co-CEO Hsu Hsien-yueh also confirmed that the company had been quietly preparing since the second half of 2025, right after receiving information about Apple's recently launched product.
Not just ASUS, the entire PC ecosystem is closely watching this event.
"I believe that all PC manufacturers, including some upstream suppliers like Microsoft, Intel, and AMD, are seriously discussing how to compete with the MacBook Neo," Wu added. He asserted that the entire PC ecosystem will launch corresponding products to compete with Apple.
The MacBook Neo is equipped with the Apple A18 Pro chip, the same processor as the iPhone 16 Pro. It has a 13-inch Liquid Retina display and a battery life of up to 16 hours.

While acknowledging the fierce competition across the industry, ASUS executives also pointed out the limitations of the MacBook Neo. Specifically, the MacBook Neo only has 8 GB of RAM and it's not upgradeable. ASUS described it as a "content consumption" device, more similar to an iPad than a flagship laptop.
However, in practice, the MacBook Neo still handles tasks well, such as rendering 4K video in DaVinci Resolve, editing photos in Adobe Lightroom, and multi-tab browsing in Chrome.
The MacBook Neo is posing a major challenge to its competitors. Until now, the sub- $600 laptop segment has been dominated by Windows. With its beautiful design, powerful performance, and strong ecosystem, the iPhone manufacturer is truly making a splash in the entire budget laptop market.
