Enhancing the value of fruit trees

Besides expanding cultivated areas and establishing large-scale specialized farming zones, farmers in Dong Thap province have been gradually shifting their production mindset from "quantity" to "quality." Promoting safe and organic production, and applying VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, not only enhances the value of agricultural products but also opens opportunities for Dong Thap fruits to conquer demanding markets, contributing to sustainable agricultural development.

BUILDING A BRAND FOR DONG THAP DURIAN

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the province currently has nearly 135,000 hectares of fruit trees, with a production of over 2.4 million tons per year. Of these, durian is the main fruit crop of Dong Thap province, with the largest planted area among all fruit varieties.

Farmers in Hiep Duc commune are focusing on improving the quality of durian fruit.

In recent years, with the support of relevant authorities, farmers have focused on establishing planting area codes and producing in a safe manner.

In Hiep Duc commune, there are currently 2,666 hectares of durian orchards, and efforts are being made to develop specialized cultivation areas in a safe and sustainable manner.

In addition to focusing on expanding the cultivated area, the locality also prioritizes improving fruit quality and strictly managing the production process to meet the increasingly high demands of the export market.

From specialized durian and organic longan growing areas to dragon fruit… all meeting VietGAP standards, it is evident that farmers in Dong Thap are gradually changing their production mindset towards safety, quality, and sustainability.

These models not only produce delicious, clean fruits that meet market demands, but also contribute to elevating the brand of Dong Thap fruits, creating a foundation for the province's fruit industry to continue to expand in the future.

With over 35 years of experience in durian cultivation and more than 10 years of farming according to VietGAP standards, Mr. Phan Thanh Liem (Hiep Phu hamlet, Hiep Duc commune) currently owns 8 acres of durian trees grown using safe farming practices.

In his farming practices, he primarily uses organic fertilizers and minimizes the use of pesticides, ensuring no harmful chemical residues remain. According to Mr. Liem, if the technical procedures are followed correctly, his 8 acres of durian trees can yield over 20 tons of durian per season.

According to Mr. Huynh Tan Mai, representative of Hiep Duc Agricultural Service Cooperative, the cooperative currently manages a farming area with approximately 1,200 participating households, covering a total area of over 573 hectares.

Each year, the cooperative sells over 1,100 tons of agricultural products for export. Currently, the cooperative has two products that have achieved OCOP 4-star certification: fresh durian and freeze-dried durian, which are available on the market.

According to Mr. Mai, durian is a commodity that brings great economic value to the people, therefore, the cooperative will continue to work alongside farmers and the locality in developing sustainable growing areas, improving the quality and value of Vietnamese agricultural products in the market.

This is also an important direction for building a stronger brand for Dong Thap durian within the export agricultural supply chain.

According to Pham Cong Trang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hiep Duc commune, the locality is focusing on developing durian-specialized farming areas in a safe and sustainable manner; promoting organic and biological farming, expanding the area meeting VietGAP standards, and strictly managing planting area codes to meet export market requirements.

At the same time, strengthen the links between farmers, cooperatives, and businesses to improve quality and maintain the reputation of Dong Thap durian brand in the international market.

Besides durian, many farmers in Dong Thap are persistently choosing clean farming methods to improve fruit quality, protect the environment, and build consumer trust.

ELEVATING THE BRAND OF THE PROVINCE'S FRUITS

In Phu Huu commune, for many years, people have been familiar with the image of Mr. Le Thanh Lap, the head of the professional farmers' association for producing safe longan in Bach Vien islet, diligently tending to his family's organic longan orchard every day.

Mr. Lap stands beside his organic longan orchard.

Throughout his years of working with longan trees, Mr. Lap has believed that agricultural products are not just for sale, but are also closely linked to public health.

With that idea in mind, he began his journey to build an organic brand with the perseverance and dedication of a farmer who loves his profession.

Mr. Le Thanh Lap said that in the past, he also used chemical fertilizers and pesticides like many other farmers. However, witnessing the soil gradually depleting and the plants weakening, he became increasingly concerned about finding a more sustainable farming method for his longan orchard.

In 2023, the Bach Vien Professional Farmers' Cooperative for Safe Longan Production was selected as a pilot model in the program "Dong Thap Farmers Reusing Organic Household Waste and Agricultural By-products to Create Biological Products for Production".

Farmers in My Tinh An commune are focusing on producing dragon fruit in a clean, high-quality manner.

Thanks to guidance from the Dong Thap Provincial Farmers' Association, Mr. Lap and the members of his group applied a composting formula using beneficial microorganisms. As a result, the batches of organic fertilizer produced no longer have a foul odor, but instead become loose and porous, with a distinctive aroma of cinnamon, starfruit, and other fruits. When applied to the longan orchard, the trees grow healthily, the soil becomes more porous, and the yield is significantly improved.

The application of organic fertilizers not only helps reduce production costs but also contributes to improving the quality of longan fruit, meeting the increasingly high demands of the market.

Currently, more than 30 members of the cooperative have mastered the technique of producing IMO organic fertilizer and applying it to their fruit trees and vegetable gardens. As a result, longan yield has increased by about 10% compared to previous seasons, while production costs have decreased by 50% - 60%.

According to Mr. Lap, in the future, he and his members will continue to cultivate organically, planting crops in staggered seasons to better serve the needs of tourists and the consumer market, contributing to the further spread of the clean production model.

Meanwhile, My Tinh An commune has the largest area of dragon fruit cultivation in the province. According to the Economic Department of My Tinh An commune, the total area of dragon fruit cultivation in the commune is currently about 1,955 hectares.

To ensure the sustainable development of dragon fruit cultivation, the locality focuses on building high-quality raw material areas according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, linked with product consumption.

This is considered an important solution to improve the quality of dragon fruit, meeting the requirements of both domestic and export markets.

Currently, two cooperatives producing clean dragon fruit have been established in the area, linked with consumption networks. At the same time, several businesses are also participating in clean production linkages for export to the European market.

Currently, Thien Phuc Cooperative has 175 members, cultivating 245 hectares of dragon fruit according to VietGAP standards. To establish its brand, the cooperative focuses on developing products that meet OCOP certification standards. Currently, the cooperative has two products, yellow dragon fruit and dried dragon fruit, that have achieved OCOP 3-star rating.

According to Pham The Tung, Head of the Economic Department of My Tinh An commune, there are currently 3 OCOP products made from dragon fruit in the commune. These include red-fleshed dragon fruit from My Tinh An Cooperative, which achieved 4-star OCOP status; and yellow dragon fruit and dried dragon fruit from Thien Phuc Cooperative, which achieved 3-star OCOP status.

In the coming period, the commune will continue to implement the dragon fruit development project, organizing production according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

At the same time, farmers are encouraged to minimize the use of pesticides in production and strengthen consumption linkages to enhance the value of local dragon fruit.
