Coach Henry Flick was unable to lead Barcelona to the Champions League semi-finals. |
The 61-year-old coach could not hide his disappointment after Barcelona were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid, despite winning 2-1 in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium on the morning of April 15th. After two legs, Barcelona lost with an aggregate score of 2-3.
The German coach believes the final result doesn't accurately reflect the two-legged tie. According to him, Barcelona did enough to reach the semi-finals, but failed to capitalize on crucial moments.
“We are very disappointed. The team had a chance to make it 3-0 but didn't score, and then we conceded a goal. We created many chances but didn't take advantage of them,” Flick said.
Playing away from home, Barcelona took the initiative and controlled the game well for much of the time. Even when playing with ten men, the Catalan team maintained pressure and created clear chances. However, a lack of accuracy in their finishing prevented them from creating the necessary lead.
Flick praised his players' fighting spirit, calling it one of the team's best performances in European competition this season.
“The players played brilliantly. I really appreciate what they showed. We were unlucky, but we have to accept it. Sometimes, football is decided by very small details,” he added.
The 61-year-old strategist admitted that Barcelona needs to improve its ability to capitalize on opportunities, especially in big matches. He believes the team could have decided the tie in the first half if they had made better use of the chances created.
Despite being eliminated from the Champions League, Barcelona still have important goals in La Liga. Flick affirmed that the whole team will quickly shift their focus, maintain their morale, and aim for the domestic title.
"Our next goal is to win La Liga. We are on the right track and we must continue. This is a young team, we will learn and get better," he emphasized.
When asked about the refereeing decisions, Flick declined to comment. He stated that it was not something that could be changed and did not want to use it as an excuse for the defeat.
Being eliminated in the quarter-finals left many disappointed, but Barcelona still showed positive signs under Flick. With a young and promising squad, this defeat could become the foundation for future growth.
