Dortmund will begin their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign with a match against Brazilian side Fluminense at MetLife Stadium at 11:00 PM tonight (Vietnam time).
Fluminense is no stranger to this tournament. They reached the final of the 2023 Club World Cup but suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat against Manchester City.
This time, the "Tricolor" arrive in the US in fairly stable form. They are currently ranked 6th in the Brazilian National League with 20 points, after defeating Internacional 2-0 on June 2nd.
It's noteworthy that Fluminense's goal-scoring ability is showing signs of improvement. In their last four matches alone, they scored 10 goals, equaling the total number of goals in the previous nine matches combined. The Brazilian team has scored at least two goals in six of their last seven matches, and in all four of those games, they scored in the first half.
Fluminense's defense also provides reassurance. Coach Renato Gaúcho's team has kept a clean sheet in their last two matches and is currently on a six-game unbeaten streak (5 wins, 1 draw). This performance shows a clear improvement compared to their previous seven-game run, where they only won two, drew two, and lost three.
On Dortmund's side, despite this being their first appearance in the FIFA Club World Cup, the German team is still considered the favorite. They earned their place thanks to their good performance in the last four seasons in the Champions League, most notably reaching the final in the 2023/24 season.
Last season in the Bundesliga, Dortmund finished in 4th place with 57 points and secured a place in the Champions League. A large part of the credit goes to coach Niko Kovac – who took over the team from Nuri Sahin in January, when Dortmund were still struggling in 11th place in the standings.
Under Kovac's leadership, Dortmund made a strong comeback with a streak of 6 consecutive wins, remaining unbeaten in the final 7 rounds of the season.
Dortmund's attack is in excellent form, scoring a total of 20 goals in their last six matches and finding the net at least twice in 10 of their last 12 games. However, concerns remain in their defense, as the team has conceded 13 goals in their last eight matches.
The clash between two technically gifted teams – one from Europe, one from South America – promises to be a goal-scoring feast, especially as both are in impressive form and possess many outstanding attacking players.
