On October 18, Forlan played for Old Boys and contributed to a 4-1 victory over Old Christians in a grassroots match. However, the 46-year-old striker suffered a strong collision with an opposing player and fell to the ground in pain. Forlan was immediately taken to hospital.
The diagnosis revealed that he had three broken ribs and fluid in his lungs. Doctors had to perform a drainage procedure to treat the dangerous condition. According to Uruguayan media, the former striker is currently in stable condition and will remain in hospital for observation until October 21.
Despite the serious injury, Forlan insisted there was no “malice” from the opposing player in the collision. Fans were quick to send their words of encouragement and wish him a speedy recovery.
Forlan was once considered one of the best strikers in the history of Uruguayan football. He played for many big teams in Europe such as MU, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, leaving his mark with beautiful goals.
On the international stage, Forlan scored 36 goals in 112 matches for the Uruguay team and especially shone at the 2010 World Cup when he won the Golden Ball award for the best player of the tournament.
