Real could sack Arbeloa if they lose to Bayern in the Champions League. |
The 1-2 defeat against Mallorca on the night of April 4th has almost extinguished Real Madrid's hopes of winning the championship. After Barcelona's victory against Atletico Madrid, the gap widened to 7 points with only 8 rounds remaining in the season.
According to Spanish media, Real Madrid's management has begun considering options for next season. With the domestic league title almost over, the Champions League has become Arbeloa's only "lifeline".
However, the road ahead is far from easy, as "Los Blancos" must face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, before potentially taking on formidable opponents like Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool in the following rounds.
Arbeloa's performance since taking over has been seriously questioned. After his first 18 matches, he suffered 5 defeats, far fewer than his predecessor Xabi Alonso, who lost 5 matches in 28 games. More worryingly, Real Madrid has shown a lack of resilience in coming from behind, winning only 2 out of 7 matches where they were trailing, highlighting limitations in their tactical adaptability.
Nevertheless, it's undeniable that Arbeloa once enjoyed considerable support thanks to his ability to control the dressing room with stars like Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, while also creating opportunities for young talents to develop. The victory against Man City in the Champions League round of 16 was considered a positive turning point.
However, the defeat at Son Moix turned things around. For President Florentino Perez, failing to win any domestic trophies was unacceptable. Arbeloa's fate was now almost certainly sealed by the clash against Bayern Munich.
