Scallions are more expensive than chicken or pork.

The price of green onions at markets has doubled compared to last month, and at convenience stores it's even more expensive than commercially raised chicken.

Ms. Loan, from Binh Thanh district, said that this week it has been very difficult for her to get green onions at the market because vendors complain about the high prices. "Normally, when I buy vegetables, the vendors give me extra green onions. But these past few days, I have to buy them for 10,000 VND each time and I only get a few sprigs," Ms. Loan said.

The owner of a vermicelli soup stall on Le Duc Tho Street (Go Vap district) also said that the price of onions is now higher than that of chives. A month ago, onions only cost 20,000-30,000 VND per kilogram, but now the wholesale price is 50,000-60,000 VND.

Observations at traditional markets show that each kilogram of scallions is now selling for twice as much as it did a month ago. At convenience stores, the price has reached 100,000 VND per kilogram. This is even more expensive than a kilogram of industrially raised chicken or pork loin.

According to locals in the onion-growing hubs of Dong Thap , Long An, and Tay Ninh provinces, green onions are currently selling for 20,000-26,000 VND per kilogram. At this price, each hectare (1,000 m2) of green onions yields an average income of over 10 million VND (after deducting expenses).

Mr. Hoang Hai, head of a vegetable cooperative in Tay Ninh , said that the sharp increase in onion prices is due to prolonged rain, which causes onions to rot and reduces yield by 30-40%. In addition, onions are more susceptible to disease during the rainy season, leading farmers to reduce cultivation compared to the dry season.

According to a representative from the Thu Duc wholesale market, the supply of herbs and spices to the market has decreased slightly compared to before. Not only onions, but also coriander and other aromatic herbs are increasing in price compared to a month ago.
