Explaining the rapid and sharp drop in live pig prices, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine stated that after a period of high live pig prices, farmers have intensified restocking and reorganized production. At the end of the first quarter, the total pig herd nationwide reached 31.8 million head, an increase of over 3% compared to the same period last year.

Pork imports do not affect domestic live pig prices.

According to Mr. Pham Kim Dang - Deputy Director Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , Vietnam has always imported pork. This is in line with the policy of participating in the international market and agreements with other countries, which still allow imports if there is a need.

"Recently, when pork prices rose, imports also increased. However, we believe that the amount of imports does not affect pork prices as public opinion suggests. Current pork prices are influenced by abundant domestic supply," Mr. Pham Kim Dang stated.

In January, Vietnam imported 12,600 tons of pork, worth $33.75 million, an increase of 105% in volume and 149% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Pork accounted for approximately 17% of the total imported meat of all types (according to data from the Import-Export Department).

However, there is currently no specific data on the amount of pork imported in the first two months of this year.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , in February, the value of imported livestock products (including pork) reached over 373 million USD, bringing the total import value of meat in the first two months of the year to over 734 million USD, an increase of 50.3% compared to the same period last year. The average import price of pork into Vietnam was 2,672 USD/ton, according to the Industry and Trade Newspaper.

On March 27, the Government Office issued document No. 2546 conveying the directives of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha regarding the issue of pork and live pig prices.

The document states that on March 9th, several newspapers reported on issues related to pork and live pig prices, including "Live pig prices are at their highest level in the past 5 years" and "Vietnam is spending twice as much on frozen pork."

In response to these concerns, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha directed the Minister of Agriculture and Environment to chair and coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, associations, and businesses to assess the market situation. Based on this assessment, they are to promptly direct and guide relevant agencies and localities in implementing solutions to ensure supply and demand, focusing on boosting livestock farming, restocking, and controlling disease outbreaks.

At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister requested control over intermediaries, strict implementation of directives on price management, and reporting to competent authorities on matters exceeding their authority.
