Rice prices rise again

Farmers in Long Binh commune harvested winter-spring rice on December 1.

According to records, in recent days, rice prices in the province have rebounded. Compared to about half a month ago, the price of rice of all kinds has increased by an average of about 500 VND/kg.

In the eastern region of Dong Thap province, farmers are entering the peak harvest period of the autumn-winter rice crop.

Mr. Le Van Tron's family (Quoi An hamlet, Long Binh commune) cultivates more than 1 hectare of rice. In the last autumn-winter crop, his family sowed Dai Thom 8 rice variety. The first field was more than 1 hectare in area, the family harvested and sold the rice for 5,600 VND/kg. The remaining 6-hectare field, harvested a few days ago, sold for 5,800 VND/kg.

Rice prices have increased slightly in recent days.

“Last season, if we don’t count the housework, my family only made a profit of about 5 million VND/ha. In the past few days, the price of rice has continued to increase, and I, like everyone else here, hope that the price of rice will increase further so that farmers can make a profit,” said Mr. Tron.

Also in Long Binh commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family (Hoa Thanh hamlet) has 3 hectares of land sowing Dai Thom 8 rice. Two days ago, his family harvested and sold the rice for 5,800 VND/kg. Mr. Tam shared: "With this price of rice, my family only makes a profit of a few hundred thousand VND/hectare, not including the house's wages. Right after selling the rice, the price of Dai Thom 8 rice has increased to 6,000 VND/kg."

In Dong Son commune, farmers are also urgently harvesting the autumn-winter rice crop. This year, Mr. Nguyen Van Van's family (Loi An hamlet) sowed OM 4218 rice variety on 8 hectares of land. The rice will be harvested in the next few days. Currently, traders have placed a deposit on the rice at 6,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Van said: “In recent days, the price of rice has increased slightly again, so farmers are happy. Some households that harvested earlier are selling rice for only 5,500 VND/kg. This season, there was a lot of rain, so the rice yield was not high, only fluctuating from 5-6 tons/ha. Many households here sold rice just to break even, some households suffered losses due to poor rice. Hopefully, next year, the price of rice will improve again, so farmers will have less difficulty.”

Mr. Huynh Van Danh, Director of Vinh Hien Company Limited (Phu Thanh Commune, Dong Thap Province) said that in recent days, rice prices in the area have increased again.

In this year's autumn-winter rice crop, the company has partnered with local cooperatives to purchase products on an area of about 200 hectares. The rice varieties that the company has partnered with are mainly Dai Thom 8 and OM 5451. The company buys rice at a higher price than the market price of about 200 VND/kg.

This year's autumn-winter crop, the company purchased about 4,000 tons of rice of all kinds. Currently, Dai Thom 8 rice costs about 6,200 VND/kg, OM 5451 costs 5,400 VND/kg, ST25 costs 8,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Danh added: "It is predicted that prices will not increase anymore. Because the current rice consumption situation is still slow and prices are stable."

Despite the increase, rice prices are still low.

According to records, although the price of rice has increased again, the price of rice has increased and then decreased. Mr. Nguyen Duc Thinh, Director of Duc Thinh Rice Company Limited (Hoi Cu Commune, Dong Thap Province) said that at the beginning of last week, the price of rice increased by about 500 - 600 VND/kg. However, by the end of the week, the price of rice decreased by about 500 VND/kg. Although the price of rice has increased and decreased, the price of paddy has increased and remained stable.

“Rice prices are increasing due to limited supply. Rice consumption is still not strong. The company has signed a contract to supply 500 tons of Japanese rice and 200 tons of glutinous rice for export to the Philippines market.

However, this market only has a new draft and has not been officially announced, so it is difficult to issue new export licenses. Currently, the company's customers have not seen any movement. Therefore, the company is also waiting for new developments from the market" - Mr. Thinh added.

In fact, the gradual increase in rice prices has given farmers hope for the winter-spring crop. However, farmers and businesses are also waiting for new signals from the market.
