According to reports, rice prices in the province have rebounded in recent days. Compared to about half a month ago, the price of all types of rice has increased by an average of about 500 VND/kg.
In the eastern part of Dong Thap province, farmers are currently entering the peak harvesting season for the autumn-winter rice crop.
Mr. Le Van Tron's family (Quoi An hamlet, Long Binh commune) cultivates over 1 hectare of rice. During the recent autumn-winter crop season, his family sowed the Dai Thom 8 rice variety. The first plot, covering over 1 hectare, was harvested and sold for 5,600 VND/kg. The remaining 6-acre plot, harvested a few days ago, sold for 5,800 VND/kg.

"Last season, excluding labor costs, my family only made about 5 million VND/hectare. In the past few days, rice prices have continued to rise, and I, like other farmers here, hope that prices will increase further so that farmers can make a profit," Mr. Tron expressed.
Also in Long Binh commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family (Hoa Thanh hamlet) has 3 acres of land planted with Dai Thom 8 rice variety. Two days ago, his family harvested and sold the rice at 5,800 VND/kg. Mr. Tam shared: "With this price, my family only made a profit of a few hundred thousand VND per acre, not including the labor costs. Just after selling the rice, the price of Dai Thom 8 rice has now increased to 6,000 VND/kg."
Meanwhile, in Dong Son commune, farmers are also urgently harvesting the autumn-winter rice crop. This year, Mr. Nguyen Van Van's family (Loi An hamlet) sowed OM 4218 rice variety on 8 acres of land. The rice will be harvested in a few days. Currently, traders have placed deposits for the rice at a price of 6,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Van expressed: “In the past few days, rice prices have slightly increased again, so farmers are happy. Those who harvested earlier only got 5,500 VND/kg for their rice. This season, the weather was very rainy, so the rice yield wasn't high, only fluctuating between 5-6 tons/ha. Many households here only broke even, and some suffered losses due to crop failure. Hopefully, next year, rice prices will improve again so that farmers will face less hardship.”
Mr. Huynh Van Danh, Director of Vinh Hien Co., Ltd. (Phu Thanh commune, Dong Thap province), said that in recent days, rice prices in the area have increased again.
During this year's autumn-winter rice crop, the company partnered with local cooperatives to purchase the produce from approximately 200 hectares. The rice varieties primarily used in this partnership are Dai Thom 8 and OM 5451. The company purchased the rice at a price about 200 VND/kg higher than the market price.
This year's autumn-winter crop season, the company purchased approximately 4,000 tons of various types of rice. Currently, Dai Thom 8 rice is priced at around 6,200 VND/kg, OM 5451 at 5,400 VND/kg, and ST25 at 8,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Danh added: "It is predicted that prices will not increase further. This is because rice consumption remains slow and prices are kept stable."

According to observations, although paddy prices have risen again, rice prices have fluctuated, rising and falling. Mr. Nguyen Duc Thinh, Director of Duc Thinh Rice Company Limited (Hoi Cu commune, Dong Thap province), said that at the beginning of last week, rice prices increased by about 500-600 VND/kg. However, by the end of the week, rice prices decreased by about 500 VND/kg. Despite the fluctuating rice prices, paddy prices have remained stable.
"Rice prices are rising due to limited supply. Currently, rice consumption remains weak. The company has finalized contracts to supply 500 tons of Japanese rice and 200 tons of glutinous rice for export to the Philippines market."
However, this market only has a draft and has not been officially announced, so issuing new export licenses is also difficult. Currently, the company's customers have not seen any developments. Therefore, the company is also waiting for new developments from the market," Mr. Thinh added.
In reality, the gradual increase in rice prices has given farmers renewed hope for the winter-spring crop. However, farmers and businesses alike are awaiting further signals from the market.
