Locals say that last year, chili peppers averaged 50,000 VND per kilogram, sometimes exceeding 70,000 VND. This year, at the beginning of the season, the price of chili peppers dropped to only 14,000 VND, and by April 9th, it had fallen to 5,000-7,000 VND per kilogram.
According to traders, chili peppers from Quang Ngai are mainly exported to China through informal channels. The price of chili peppers has decreased due to reduced import demand from China, coupled with increased transportation costs, causing domestic traders to purchase them cautiously.
Quang Ngai province has a very large area dedicated to chili cultivation. This year alone, during the winter-spring season, farmers planted over 1,000 hectares with an average yield of approximately 21,000 tons per year. However, chili cultivation is fragmented and small-scale, lacking the formation of large-scale specialized farming areas. Currently, chili prices are volatile, depending on export capacity to China. The province relies mainly on traders for purchasing, lacking stable guaranteed buyers from businesses, leading to high risks when the market stops importing. Faced with sharply falling chili prices, some chili purchasing facilities are storing chili in cold storage to wait for prices to rise or drying the chili.
