Increase in children with acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus.

Thanh Hoa province is currently seeing an increase in the number of children suffering from acute diarrhea caused by the Rotavirus at many medical facilities. Doctors warn that the disease can cause severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and even be life-threatening if not detected and treated promptly.

Increase in children with acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus.

Nearly 60% of pediatric patients being treated at the Gastroenterology Department of Thanh Hoa Pediatric Hospital suffer from acute diarrhea.

At the Gastroenterology Department of Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital, the number of pediatric patients admitted due to digestive illnesses has increased significantly in recent days. Currently, the department is treating over 80 pediatric patients, with approximately 60% of cases suffering from acute diarrhea caused by the Rotavirus. The number of cases has increased by more than 50% compared to the period before summer.

According to doctors, the worrying thing is that many parents are still complacent when their children show signs such as fever, vomiting, and frequent diarrhea. Many assume the child has a common digestive disorder or is teething and self-treat at home with over-the-counter medication. By the time they bring the child to a medical facility, the illness has often progressed to a severe stage.

Many parents are negligent and do not take their children to medical facilities for early treatment, causing the children's illnesses to worsen.

According to Dr. Luong Thi Phuong Thuy, a specialist in Gastroenterology at Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital: "Many children are admitted to the hospital in a state of severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and even respiratory failure. Despite numerous warnings from the health sector, some parents still restrict their children's water intake and fruit consumption or self-medicate with anti-diarrheal drugs, worsening the condition."

Not only at Thanh Hoa Pediatric Hospital, but many hospitals in the province have also recorded a high increase in the number of children suffering from acute diarrhea caused by the Rotavirus. At Ha Trung General Hospital, Sam Son General Hospital, and Medic Hai Tien General Hospital, the number of hospitalizations due to acute diarrhea in the past two weeks has increased by 30-50% compared to before.

Over 40% of pediatric patients treated at the Pediatrics Department of Ha Trung General Hospital suffer from digestive diseases, mainly acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus.

Dr. Bui Thi Lan, Head of the Pediatrics Department at Ha Trung General Hospital, said: “More than 40% of pediatric patients treated in the department suffer from digestive diseases, mainly acute diarrhea caused by the Rotavirus. The disease can occur year-round but usually increases sharply during the transition from winter to spring and in the summer. Children usually start with symptoms of vomiting and fever, followed by frequent bowel movements throughout the day, fatigue, and lethargy. The disease can occur at all ages but is most common in children from 6 months to under 5 years old.”

Dr. Luong Thi Phuong Thuy, a specialist in Gastroenterology at Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital, advises: "Parents should absolutely not give children antibiotics, anti-diarrheal medication, or industrial soft drinks without a doctor's prescription. These medications can disrupt the gut microbiome and worsen the condition."

Experts also emphasize that rotavirus vaccination is an effective measure to reduce the risk of contracting the disease and limit severe complications in young children.

With the current hot and humid weather and unpredictable rain and sunshine, parents need to raise their awareness of disease prevention and closely monitor their children's health to detect any abnormalities early, contributing to protecting their health and overall development.

Rotavirus is primarily transmitted through the digestive tract and can spread very quickly in the community. Therefore, the health sector advises parents to implement effective preventive measures for their children, such as:

- Feed children cooked food and boiled water, ensuring food safety and hygiene.

- Wash hands frequently with soap for both children and caregivers.

- Clean the child's belongings, toys, and living environment.

- Ensure adequate hydration and nutrition when children show signs of diarrhea.
