The value of honesty

In the hustle and bustle of transactions, the proactive return of excess money to customers by female employees of banks and people's credit funds is not only a professional responsibility but also a beautiful story of integrity, contributing to rekindling people's trust in the financial system.

Bank tellers and cashiers are the first and most frequent point of contact with customers, and are considered the face of the bank. Their customer-facing work requires them to be cheerful, dedicated, and professional. Furthermore, dealing with loan and deposit amounts ranging from a few million to billions of dong, with daily transactions reaching hundreds of billions of dong, demands significant information and data.

Therefore, the culture of "honesty and integrity" has become the guiding principle for the female treasury staff and tellers. They are exemplary "good people, good deeds," leaving a deep impression on customers by proactively contacting them to return excess money immediately after their shift ends and closing the cash register.

Ms. Phan Thi Xuan Chinh has worked for over 20 years at the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank ( Agribank ) Yen Bai Branch. Her work, which involves handling large sums of money daily, has instilled in her a meticulous nature. Every year, she returns excess money to customers. In 2024 alone, she returned 152 million VND and 100 USD. In 2025, she returned 26 items totaling nearly 900 million VND; the largest of which was 600 million VND. Naturally reserved and hesitant to share about herself, Ms. Chinh confided: “Every time I discover excess money, the first thing I think about is the customer's concern. Returning money to customers is not only about complying with regulations but also about maintaining the bank's reputation. I always believe that customers come to the bank not only to deposit money but also to entrust their trust.”

In all professions in general, and banking in particular, integrity must always be prioritized. Banking officials deeply understand this. Ms. Bui Thi Thao Hang, an employee of the Hong Ha People's Credit Fund in Au Lau ward, shared: "For each customer who comes to transact, I always carefully check the amount received and the statement. When we discover any excess money, even just one cent, we return it. That is a principle of professional ethics, and we always adhere to it. I believe that maintaining trust with customers is extremely important." Last year, in her role as cashier, Ms. Hang returned nine instances of excess money to customers.

For bank tellers, their daily joy comes from completing a transaction with a customer, advising them on the information they need, and introducing products that satisfy them. Although relatively new to the profession, Nguyen Thi Thanh Lam, a personal banking specialist at Techcombank 's Yen Bai branch, has already returned excess change to customers on numerous occasions. Thanh Lam shared: "There are many reasons why customers might give excess money. However, after counting, bank staff will detect the error and promptly inform the customer."

These actions are particularly important in the context of the booming electronic transactions. Direct experiences of "human connection" and trust remain the strongest bond between banks and customers.

Mr. Vu Van Dong from Nam Cuong ward couldn't hide his joy when he received his change of 10 million VND: "I was very surprised because I thought I had been very careful while counting the money. The tellers are very honest and incorruptible. This makes customers always satisfied with their service and professionalism."

Over the past year, bank branches and people's credit funds in the province have returned excess money to customers in 437 transactions, totaling 1.725 billion VND. The act of returning excess money, whether large or small, deserves recognition. It is the clearest manifestation of professional ethics, affirming that even in a place where only dry numbers are displayed on electronic screens, the value of honesty remains paramount.
