Reduce the number of exam subjects.

Observations from the 10th grade entrance exam plans show that most localities maintain the exam format with three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language. Examples include Binh Duong, Can Tho , Da Nang, Hung Yen, Phu Tho, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, and Ho Chi Minh City…

Specifically, the Da Nang Department of Education and Training has just announced the schedule for the entrance exam to 10th grade in high schools for the 2024-2025 school year. Accordingly, the entrance exam for 10th grade in Da Nang for the 2024-2025 school year will take place from June 2nd to 4th. Candidates will take exams in three subjects: Literature, Foreign Language, and Mathematics.

Notably, after 11 years of using the selection-based admission method, Quang Nam province has decided to organize an entrance exam for admission to 10th grade in public high schools for the 2024-2025 school year. This new approach is expected to reduce negative practices and ensure objectivity and fairness in evaluating and ranking students. The 10th grade entrance exam in Quang Nam province for 2024-2025 will consist of three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and English. Approximately 25,000 9th-grade students are expected to participate in this exam.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the entrance exam for 10th grade is expected to take place in early June with three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and Foreign Language. The most significant change is that students can only register for a maximum of five preferences for public high schools, a reduction compared to previous years. This is because Ho Chi Minh City has stopped admitting students to non-specialized 10th grade classes at the two specialized high schools, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia, according to Circular 05/2023 of the Ministry of Education and Training on the organization and operation of specialized high schools.

According to the Hung Yen Provincial Department of Education and Training's announcement regarding the 10th grade entrance exam, the province will hold three exams for admission to 10th grade in early June 2024. Literature will be essay-based, with a 120-minute time limit. Mathematics and English will be multiple-choice exams, with time limits of 90 and 60 minutes respectively. Thus, this year's Hung Yen entrance exam has reduced the number of subjects by two compared to previous years: Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology) and Social Sciences (History, Geography, or Civic Education).

In addition, the 2024-2025 high school entrance exam in Ninh Binh province will have fewer subjects, shorter exam time, and the third subject will be announced earlier. This year, candidates will take three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and a third subject chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, or English. Last year, Ninh Binh organized a third exam which was a combined test consisting of English and two other subjects, one from Physics, Chemistry, or Biology, and one from History, Geography, or Civic Education. Thus, compared to the 2023 entrance exam, the 2024-2025 high school entrance exam will have two fewer subjects.

The only locality that has exams in 4 subjects.

To date, Bac Giang is the only locality to announce its plan for the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools, consisting of four subjects: Mathematics, Literature, English, and a fourth subject to be randomly selected from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Civic Education. The results of the draw will be announced by the Bac Giang Department of Education and Training to students, parents, and schools before March 31st.

This is also the approach that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has applied in previous years. According to current regulations, Hanoi organizes entrance exams for grade 10 consisting of four subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language, and a fourth subject to be announced later in March each year. However, in reality, in recent years, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on teaching and learning, Hanoi has only organized exams in three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language, omitting the fourth subject. Whether or not to include the fourth subject in the exam is decided each year. This year's grade 10 entrance exam will still be an entrance exam, but the subjects and exam dates have not yet been announced. According to the plan of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, a meeting on the 2024-2025 school year's admissions process will be held on the afternoon of February 22nd.

While many provinces and cities organize entrance exams for 10th grade in high schools, some localities maintain a selection-based admission system, such as Vinh Long, Dong Thap, Khanh Hoa, and Lao Cai, in order to reduce pressure and costs for society.

For many years, the Ministry of Education and Training has stipulated that the organization of entrance exams, selection processes, or a combination of both, for admission to grade 10 is at the discretion of local authorities. The Departments of Education and Training advise and submit to the Provincial/City People's Committees for approval the enrollment plan, as well as deciding on the exam subjects, exam nature, exam weighting, and bonus points.

"

The entrance exam for 10th grade in the 2024-2025 school year will also be the last exam under the old general education program (2006). From the 2025-2026 school year onwards, the exam will be organized according to the content of the new general education program (2018).
