To commemorate the recent National Reunification Day (April 30th), students from Thuy Phuong Secondary School (Thanh Thuy Ward) had the opportunity to visit the Mieu Doi secret bunker, used by soldiers during the resistance war in the ward. The students attentively observed every gesture and listened to every story about the bunker's structure and its role in protecting cadres and supporting revolutionary activities. Elderly veterans, their hair graying, slowly recounted their memories of a time of bombs and bullets.
The tour program is one of many activities organized by the Ward Veterans Association in coordination with the Ward Youth Union to help union members and young people learn about local history. On this occasion, students offered incense at the Ward Martyrs' Memorial, visited Van The village communal house, Van Thanh temple, and many historical sites associated with the revolutionary movement. Each destination tells stories about the indomitable fighting spirit of the army and people of Thanh Thuy during the resistance war.
Mr. Truong Van Cong, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Thanh Thuy Ward, said that educating the younger generation about traditions has always been one of the key tasks that the Association focuses on. For many years, the Veterans Association of the ward has become a special bridge between the past and the present through activities educating young people and teenagers about patriotic traditions in the area. Trips to historical sites, visits to "red addresses" (historical landmarks), and traditional talks not only help the younger generation better understand the history of their homeland but also contribute to fostering love for the country and gratitude towards previous generations.
"We hope that the children will not only learn about history through books but also see firsthand the landmarks and historical relics that still exist in their homeland. When they hear stories from historical witnesses, they will more deeply appreciate the sacrifices of their ancestors to achieve the peaceful life we have today," Mr. Cong shared.
The traditional talks organized by the Ward Veterans Association in coordination with schools always attract a large number of students. Through stories about the arduous fighting life and the unwavering loyalty of the local army and people during the resistance war against the US to save the country, many students gain a deeper understanding for the first time of the losses their ancestors endured.
Nguyen Tuan Minh, a student from Thuy Phuong Secondary School, shared his thoughts on the visit to the Mieu Doi secret tunnel: “Visiting the Mieu Doi tunnel and hearing the stories firsthand, I was able to imagine the difficulties and dangers that the soldiers of the past faced. I feel grateful to the previous generations and realize that I need to study harder to be worthy of their sacrifices.”
Besides activities for students, the Veterans Association of Thanh Thuy Ward also collaborates with other organizations and associations to organize many programs focusing on historical sites and field trips to foster revolutionary ideals among its members and young people. Annually, the Association, together with the Civil Law Faculty's Youth Union (Hue University of Law, Hue University) and Thuy Phuong Secondary School, organizes ceremonies to commemorate the heroic martyrs at the Memorial Temple of 27 Martyrs in My Thuy; conducts environmental cleanup campaigns, beautifies the historical site grounds, and donates books to its members and students.
Mr. Ngo Duc Phu, Vice Chairman of the Veterans Association of the ward, said that it is encouraging that more and more young people are interested in local history and actively participate in activities to honor and protect historical sites. From the historical lessons they hear, see, and feel through their own experiences, they better understand the value of peace, appreciate the contributions of their ancestors, and nurture the aspiration to contribute to their homeland.
