Dancer Ta Thuy Chi, daughter of Professor and People's Artist Ta Bon, said her father passed away at 9:05 PM on April 19th, at the age of 83.
"After more than a year of living with pancreatic cancer, my father and our family have had so much more time together filled with optimism, happiness, and fulfillment. Now, he no longer has to endure so much pain and has passed away peacefully," Thuy Chi shared.
Violinist Ta Bon is considered a leading figure in Vietnamese classical music. He was born in 1942 in Thuong Tin (formerly Ha Tay province) into a family with a rich musical tradition.
People's Artist Ta Bon is a violin soloist who performs in concerts alongside other renowned artists such as Bui Gia Tuong, Trung Kien, Dang Thai Son, Le Dung, etc.
Professor and People's Artist Ta Bon's father was musician Ta Phuoc - the first principal of the Vietnam School of Music (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music). His brothers all pursued careers in string instruments: Ta Tuan, Ta Don (violin), and Ta Huan (cello).
During the resistance war, artist Ta Bon accompanied his father to music classes for soldiers to practice and perform. At the age of 12, he was sent to China and later directly admitted to the Tchaikovsky Conservatory (formerly the Soviet Union). At the age of 22, he returned to Vietnam to work as a violin instructor.
People's Artist Ta Bon was one of the first two Vietnamese students to study at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He was the first Vietnamese contestant to participate in international violin competitions in Romania in 1958 and in Finland in 1962. He is also known as the first Vietnamese artist to be invited to participate in international jury competitions.
Professor and People's Artist Ta Bon has performed with many orchestras such as the Moscow National Symphony Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony Orchestra, etc.
He was awarded the title of Associate Professor by the State in 1980 and Professor in 1991. He and Professor Bich Ngoc became the first two violin professors in Vietnam. In 1993, he received the title of Meritorious Artist. In 2001, he was awarded the title of People's Artist.
In 1999, People's Artist Ta Bon served as an advisor to the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra during their performance tour in Shanghai (China). From 1994 to 2006, he was the Head of the Symphony Orchestra of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

People's Artist Ta Bon contributed to teaching many generations of violinists. Many of his students have achieved fame and won numerous international awards, such as artist Do Phuong Nhu, People's Artist Bui Cong Duy, etc.
People's Artist Ta Bon's wife is the distinguished teacher and dancer Kim Dung. The two met while studying together in the former Soviet Union. Both of People's Artist Ta Bon and Meritorious Teacher Kim Dung's children have pursued careers in the arts.
The memorial service for People's Artist Ta Bon will take place at 10:00 AM on April 22nd at the National Funeral Home in the South (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City). The funeral ceremony will be held at 5:30 AM on April 23rd. The remains will be interred at Phuc An Vien Cemetery (Ho Chi Minh City).
