'AI teacher' Iris immediately impressed students when she appeared in February because she could speak three languages and answer complex questions on a variety of topics.
The KTCT High School in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has made a breakthrough by introducing an artificial intelligence (AI) teacher named Iris. Iris is the first AI-powered humanoid robot in Kerala and India.
This is part of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project, developed in collaboration with the technology company Makerlabs, to promote extracurricular activities in schools.
According to Meera MN, the principal, students develop many skills through hands-on experience in the lab, in various fields such as robotics and artificial intelligence.
"Those experiences helped us realize the potential of AI," a school representative said.

Making her first appearance in class last month, Iris, dressed in a pinkish-purple sari, immediately impressed the students.
According to Makerlabs, this AI robot can speak three languages and answer complex questions on a variety of topics. The "teacher" is described as having a feminine but emotionless voice.
"When students ask questions, Iris will generate answers that closely resemble those of a human," explains Hari Sagar, CEO of MakerLabs.
Furthermore, Iris's knowledge base is broader than other automated teaching tools because it is supported by generative AI. This robot can also accommodate personalized learning and is equipped with wheels to enhance mobility.

The use of "AI teachers" marks a significant shift in education in the state of Kerala. Following positive feedback, the school, which has over 3,000 students, is reportedly planning to expand the program in the next school year.
