The Ministry of Education and Training has proposed a plan for the high school graduation exam for students under the 2018 General Education Program.

At the National Council for Education and Human Resource Development meeting on November 14th, the Ministry of Education and Training presented a draft report on the plan for the high school graduation exam starting in 2025. Accordingly, it proposed to the Government that the high school graduation exam be conducted in four subjects, including two compulsory subjects and two elective subjects.

Reduce exam pressure.

With this option, a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper conducted an informal survey with 10 high school teachers in Ho Chi Minh City. These teachers unanimously agreed with and supported the option of having students take the high school graduation exam with the fewest subjects among the options proposed by the Ministry. That is, all the teachers chose the option of taking the high school graduation exam with 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects.

Teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh from Nguyen Du High School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) believes that the plan proposed by the Ministry to the Government is consistent with the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program and the aspirations of students. Exams in four subjects will help reduce the workload and pressure on students and society.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), expressed his support for the Ministry's proposed plan. He believes that having fewer subjects in the exam will reduce pressure on students and lessen the economic burden compared to organizing a multi-subject exam that is prolonged.

At the same time, the principal also approved of having two compulsory subjects, mathematics and literature, and two elective subjects from the following: foreign language, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economics and law education, computer science, and technology. The ability to choose two elective subjects will help students best showcase their strengths and abilities in the exam. It is also a way to reduce exam pressure for them.

What do students say about the high school graduation exam having 4 subjects?

A group of 11th-grade students from Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) expressed the view that taking exams in four subjects is in line with the wishes of the majority of students. They argued that having to study and take exams in subjects not included in the university entrance exam combinations or career orientation would be too burdensome for students.

Teacher Le Minh Huy from Nguyen Hien High School (District 11) also said that choosing the 4-subject option as proposed by the Ministry has the advantage of reducing exam pressure for students.

In addition, this teacher believes that there are also potential drawbacks that can lead to unbalanced learning. For example, students might focus on studying the subjects they've chosen for the exam while neglecting other subjects.

Does the fact that foreign languages are optional subjects in the entrance exam affect the learning of this subject?

Addressing concerns that making foreign languages an elective subject would impact the orientation of global citizenship education and the development of competencies in modern digital transformation, Mr. Phu stated that it is time we consider foreign languages as a skill and an essential asset that students must prepare for, rather than thinking that learning is only necessary for exams.

However, Mr. Phu also suggested that the Ministry could consider awarding bonus points to candidates who, although not choosing a foreign language as a subject, achieve high scores in internationally recognized and prestigious certificates. This could encourage students to better develop their foreign language skills.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, with the high school graduation exam plan having 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects, candidates will have 36 ways to choose. Therefore, teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh suggested that the Ministry should soon announce the specifics of these 36 choices and how these combinations will meet the purposes of university admissions and career orientation.
