To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024), the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Science and Technology (1959 - 2024), and in anticipation of World Science for Peace and Development Day (November 10), on the afternoon of October 10, the Science and Technology Publishing House (Ministry of Science and Technology) organized a seminar to introduce the "Vietnamese - English - Chinese Dictionary of Science, Technology and Innovation".
The seminar aimed to share and discuss in depth the terminology of innovation and science and technology, as well as the importance of the dictionary in supporting research and application of technology in Vietnam.
At the seminar, Bui Minh Cuong, Director of the Science and Technology Publishing House, stated that the first volume of the Vietnamese-English-Chinese dictionary of science, technology, and innovation has been supplemented with many new terms related to science, technology, and innovation, contributing to the enhancement of knowledge and the development of science and technology in Vietnam. The author of the dictionary is Mr. Ly Kien Nam, born in 1937, a person with extensive experience and contributions to the Vietnamese science and technology sector. "In 32 years in the publishing industry, this is the first time I've worked with an elderly author who is so sharp-minded and works at an unexpectedly fast pace," Mr. Bui Minh Cuong remarked about author Ly Kien Nam.
The manuscript for the dictionary was submitted to the Science and Technology Publishing House in 2023. After a year, thanks to the efforts of the author, editors, designers, and typewriters, the more than 500-page, large-format book comparing English, Vietnamese, and Chinese was published, facilitating easy lookup and translation between the three languages. The book, meticulously compiled over four years with the dedication of the author and his son, engineer Ly Chi Cuong, is not only a reference document but also a bridge between science and culture in the three languages. The Science and Technology Publishing House hopes to release Volume 2 of the Vietnamese-English-Chinese Dictionary of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the near future to serve the research and learning needs of readers nationwide.
At the seminar, author Ly Kien Nam shared that today, innovation has become deeply ingrained in thinking and life. Advances in science and technology, and socio- economic progress, have created a great impetus for the country's development. Therefore, a scientific and technological dictionary is needed to meet the demands of innovation and development, serving as a bridge for accessing new, modern, and innovative scientific and technological knowledge. The dictionary contains over 8,000 terms, divided into eight main fields: Mechanics, metallurgy, architecture and construction; technology and production; innovation; production equipment; physics and chemistry.
Born amidst Vietnam's implementation of national strategies on science and technology, this Vietnamese-English-Chinese dictionary of science, technology, and innovation not only meets the needs of research and reference but also serves as an important tool to promote international cooperation, technology transfer, and innovation. In particular, the dictionary was launched and introduced during the Science and Technology Book Week in October 2024 with the aim of spreading a reading culture, promoting the pursuit of knowledge, especially in science and technology books, and working towards building a learning and research society, creating a positive aspect in social life.
