Everyone shared in the joy of the residents here because they would have new, spacious apartments, bidding farewell to decades of living in makeshift shelters with their feet sticking out the door.
People wept not only because of their homes. They were moved to tears because next to them would still be their old neighborhood, still the same place with "the street corner, the school, the riverside, the road" in the city they had "loved since birth."
Seeing the tears in the eyes of the woman in Ma Lang, an urban planning expert shared that the city cares for its people not only through mechanisms but also through heartfelt concerns and anxieties about their happiness.
The people have spacious houses and still retain their connection to the community where they have lived for so many years. The spirit of the city is present in each person and each home in Ma Lang, the Chicken and Rice Market.
In a meeting a few days later, City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang also affirmed that the new point was that the city would not only address urban issues but also place the lives of its people at the center.
On-site resettlement will help people stabilize their lives and continue to be attached to their familiar surroundings in better living conditions.
The tears shed in Ma Lang were therefore not only a source of emotion and happiness, but also opened up hope for a new model and way of thinking in policymaking - as Secretary Tran Luu Quang instructed.
The city still has tens of thousands of houses along canals and waterways that need to be relocated and resettled; there are still hundreds of old, dilapidated apartment buildings; and numerous construction projects that require the cooperation of residents to vacate the land...
The in-depth, humane approach adopted in Ma Lang and the Chicken-Rice Market will serve as a model for the city to build upon in future projects.
Ho Chi Minh City is also home to millions of workers who are and will need housing, following the rental housing model as requested by the General Secretary . And given its stature as the largest city in the country, a groundbreaking approach is certainly needed to ensure that millions of workers in the city have housing and live happily and contentedly.
The story in Ma Lang will serve as proof of internal strength and open up hope for the city to once again have a pioneering model.
Ma Lang, Gao Ga Market, houses on canals, rental properties, and many other large-scale projects and programs of the city all require a new approach and a new mindset.
The product at that time was not just a tangible construction or project, but more importantly, a model, an institution in which the city was expected to be a pioneering experiment.
The tears shed at Ma Lang, the Rice and Chicken Market, are gradually closing a chapter of hardship for the people living in cramped houses. But they have also opened up hope for new models and approaches, stemming from a people-centered mindset and the courage and initiative of the city's officials.
