From border classrooms and flood-stricken homes to livelihood models that help people stabilize their lives, the Border Guard not only supports the people in overcoming difficulties but also persistently cultivates trust in the nation's frontier. It is through this close relationship that many border residents and fishermen have become "living landmarks," working alongside the troops to safeguard national sovereignty from early on and from afar.
These are "living landmarks".
One June morning, beside the border marker, Mr. Bien Van Lac and border guards cleared weeds and cleaned the area around the marker, a familiar task they have been doing for many years.
Having left his hometown in Nghe An province to settle in the Central Highlands more than 30 years ago, Mr. Lac has come to regard the Buon Don border region as his second home. With his reputation within the community, he regularly collaborates with border guards to patrol and protect the border, boundary markers, and encourages residents to abide by the law and maintain security and order. These actions stem not from the responsibility of a position, but from his love for his homeland and his commitment to protecting national sovereignty.
Not only along the land border, but also far offshore, fishermen who work day and night at sea are contributing to affirming and protecting national sovereignty through their voyages. At Vung Ro Port, border guards regularly meet with ship owners and captains to disseminate legal information, guide them in combating IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing, and maintain self-governing models for fishing grounds and harbors.

Major Le Minh Thao, Political Officer of the Vung Ro Port Border Guard Station, said: Fishermen are the crucial "eyes and ears" at sea, a vital force contributing to the protection of maritime sovereignty from early on and from afar. Therefore, the unit constantly innovates its propaganda and mobilization work; assigns Party members to be in charge of fishing vessels at risk of violating IUU regulations, and promotes self-governance models in fishing grounds and harbors, encouraging fishermen to participate in maintaining security and order, protecting the marine environment, and supporting each other in economic development.
Border guards must truly be a bridge between the Party, the government, and the people; relying on the people to carry out the task of protecting the border, taking good care of the people's lives, promoting social welfare programs, thereby firmly consolidating the people's trust in the border areas of the Fatherland." From the vast borderlands to the open sea, the image of people voluntarily standing side-by-side with border guards is vivid evidence of the strength of the people's support. Achieving these "living landmarks" is the result of a persistent process of building trust by the Border Guard through concrete, practical, and life-affirming models and actions such as: "Border and Island Education Lessons"; "QR Code Boards for Disseminating the Vietnamese Border Guard Law and Regulations on Preventing and Combating IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) Fishing"; and the regularly maintained "Legal Bookcases" and "Border Guard Loudspeakers," contributing to raising public awareness and responsibility for the task of protecting national sovereignty and border security.
Building a "fortress" of people's hearts.
When people trust the military, understand the law, and feel the companionship of border guards in their daily lives, they will proactively participate in protecting the border and islands as if protecting their own homes. Currently, along the entire border of the province, 81 clans with 716 families have established self-governing security and order groups; 51 self-governing security and order groups in villages and hamlets; and 489 households have registered to self-manage nearly 72 km of border and 7 national border markers. Thousands of pieces of information from the people have helped functional forces to promptly combat and prevent crime, maintaining peace and security along the border. From being the target of propaganda and mobilization, many people have become active participants in protecting the border, becoming "living border markers" in the vast wilderness.
During his visit and working session with officers and soldiers of the Ea H'Leo Border Guard Station in February 2026, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized that firmly protecting national sovereignty and border security must be built on the foundation of people's support; he also requested the Border Guard force to continue to play a core role in managing and protecting the border, caring for the people's lives, and consolidating national unity.
Against the backdrop of a continuously complex global and regional situation, the task of protecting national sovereignty, border security, and maritime territories presents many new demands. In light of this, the Provincial Border Guard Command has determined to continue to play its core and specialized role in managing and protecting national sovereignty and border security; while simultaneously strengthening the development of a comprehensive border defense system and a people's border defense posture integrated with a robust national defense and people's security posture.

Colonel Do Quang Tham, Deputy Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command and Political Commissar of the Provincial Border Guard Command, stated: In the coming time, the Provincial Border Guard will continue to promote propaganda and mobilization of the masses, develop self-governance models, and build a "people's belt" to protect the border and islands; coordinate with local Party committees and authorities to raise awareness and responsibility of the people regarding the task of protecting sovereignty. The goal is for every citizen in the border areas and every fisherman venturing out to sea to truly become a "living landmark," working with the Border Guard to safeguard sovereignty from early on and from afar.
Today, our borders are protected not only by national border markers or frontline patrols. In the context of increasingly numerous traditional and non-traditional security challenges, behind every border, every wave, are the people silently contributing to protecting our land and sea with a sense of responsibility and love for our country.
When the people's hearts become "living landmarks," they also form the strongest bulwark for protecting territorial sovereignty and national border security, creating a foundation for the country's stability and sustainable development in all situations.
