Preserving the greenery of our homeland.

QTO - Faced with the trend of development and urbanization leading to increased environmental pollution, in recent years, along with the successful implementation of patriotic emulation movements, the Veterans Association of Quang Tri province has always focused on poverty reduction and economic development associated with environmental protection and food safety. Through this, it has contributed to socio-economic development in the locality, sustainable poverty reduction, joint efforts in building new rural areas and civilized urban areas, and preserving the green environment of the homeland.

According to Lê Hồng Văn, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Veterans Association: Recognizing the importance of environmental protection, every year, the association at all levels has signed cooperation agreements with political and social organizations and relevant departments and agencies on environmental protection with specific terms; integrating environmental protection content into the development of programs and plans and organizing their implementation; and focusing on training to improve the knowledge of its members.

Since 2022, thousands of war veteran association members have been equipped with knowledge about the Environmental Protection Law; many specialized training courses organized by the association on building new rural areas, agricultural extension, forestry extension, and fisheries extension have incorporated environmental content. This is an important starting point that helps each war veteran association member understand their responsibilities and know how to mobilize the community to participate.

“After participating in training courses, we, the members of the Veterans Association, understand even better the harmful effects of waste and the benefits of living in a clean environment. From there, we encourage our families, relatives, and neighbors to join hands in protecting the environment through the smallest actions, such as: not littering, cleaning up around our living areas; participating in environmental protection movements and campaigns, such as 'Green Sunday' and 'Volunteer Saturday'… contributing to changing perceptions, raising awareness, and spreading this message in the community,” shared Mr. Le Quang Thao, Head of the Veterans Association Branch in Ward 2, Quang Tri Commune.

With the increasing awareness among members of their responsibilities and obligations in environmental protection, the environmental protection models of the Veterans' Association at all levels have also increased and become more effective. To date, the entire province has 182 environmental protection clubs for veterans, including 4 models for marine environmental protection; 752 self-governing veteran groups for streets and villages; 36 veteran groups managing model road sections; and many specific models such as: "The railway section cared for by grandfather and grandson together," eradicating golden apple snails and Mimosa pudica; establishing neighborhood, village, and hamlet security teams; and teams for disseminating information on disaster and disease prevention...

During the period 2022-2025, war veterans' association members throughout the province donated over 250,000 m² of land, contributed more than 4,700 million VND, over 500,000 man-days of labor, cleared nearly 200 km of roads, dredged more than 150 km of canals, extended 190 km of street lighting lines, and planted hundreds of thousands of trees.

Each model represents an innovative approach, tailored to its specific location. From the coastal areas of Hai An, Cua Tung, Nhat Le, and Bao Ninh to the plains of Hai Lang and Phong Nha, and the mountainous regions of Huong Hoa and Dakrong… all bear the distinct mark of the soldiers of yesteryear.

However, in practice, the awareness of some people regarding the importance of environmental protection is still limited; they have not fully grasped the immediate and long-term harms of environmental pollution; the collection, sorting, and treatment of waste in some residential areas, households, and individuals are not in accordance with regulations, such as the transportation and burial of waste and dead animal carcasses not following proper technical procedures; and the use of prohibited fishing gear and equipment has not been completely eradicated. In remote areas, coastal areas, and even suburban areas, livestock are still allowed to roam freely in living spaces, and sanitation facilities do not meet environmental hygiene standards...

“To keep Cua Tung beach (Cua Tung commune) clean and beautiful, especially during the tourist season, the Veterans Association of the commune has arranged for its members from various villages to take turns, on a weekly and monthly basis, assisting businesses in collecting and disposing of a significant amount of waste. However, to ensure hygienic waste collection and disposal, the association also hopes for guidance, investment, and coordination from relevant departments and agencies to better support the Veterans Association of the commune in carrying out its nhiệm vụ and contributing to environmental protection,” said Nguyen Viet Quang, Vice Chairman of the Veterans Association of Cua Tung commune.

According to Vice Chairman of the Provincial Veterans Association Le Hong Van, to effectively achieve the goal of environmental protection and combating climate change, in the coming time, the Veterans Association at all levels will continue to strengthen propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage veteran members and the people to participate in protecting natural landscapes and biodiversity; coordinate the organization of training courses on environmental protection knowledge and waste treatment methods for members and the people. At the same time, they will promote the effective operation of clubs and self-governing veteran groups on environmental protection, village road management, and security and order; develop and replicate good models and innovative approaches; and pay special attention to establishing clubs and groups of veterans to protect the marine environment and build model groups of veterans to manage exemplary road sections...

The goals of the Quang Tri Provincial Veterans Association in the coming period are: Environmental protection activities will always be linked to the task of helping each other reduce poverty and develop the economy; striving to reduce the percentage of poor veteran households by 4-4.5% annually, and increase the percentage of well-off and wealthy veteran households to 65-70%; eliminating 40% of dilapidated houses; maintaining the effective operation of existing veterans' environmental protection clubs and models; establishing 8-10 more veterans' clubs for marine environmental protection, and 20-25 veterans' groups managing model, bright, green, clean, and beautiful road sections.

“In this regard, veteran association members must always set a good example and take the lead in building environmentally friendly neighborhoods, villages, and residential areas; protecting, rationally and economically using natural resources, minimizing the use of plastic bags and non-biodegradable waste; not using destructive fishing methods; contributing their efforts, finances, and knowledge to environmental protection, and actively planting more trees and ornamental plants. Businesses owned by veterans must comply with food safety regulations in production and business, and say no to the use of products harmful to people, living organisms, and ecosystems. Veteran associations at all levels will regularly monitor, inspect, and direct the implementation of environmental protection work; replicate effective models and innovative approaches; integrate reviews, summaries, and lessons learned, while also commending and rewarding collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in the environmental protection movement,” Vice Chairman of the Provincial Veteran Association Le Hong Van further emphasized.
