Recently, several social media sites reported on a group of six Lao tourists who bought snacks at a street food stall on Duong Dinh Nghe Street (An Hai Ward) and were charged 760,000 VND. Finding the price too high, the tourists questioned their Vietnamese tour guide, who then spoke with the vendor and received 200,000 VND back. However, upon seeing that the tourists had to pay 560,000 VND for a meal consisting of four skewers of octopus, two skewers of okra, a portion of chicken feet, and three sausages, the tour guide became indignant and posted about the incident on social media.
The incident was widely shared on social media, significantly impacting the image of the city as a tourist destination that it has been striving to build.
Upon receiving the information, local authorities intervened, inspecting the area where the vendors were allegedly overcharging the Laotian tourists and summoning the vendors to the ward office for questioning. An Hai Ward issued an administrative fine of 750,000 VND for the vendor's violation of "failing to display prices at the required location as stipulated by law."
Following the incident, the An Hai ward urban regulations enforcement force intensified its inspection and enforcement efforts to address urban order issues, responding to public complaints about numerous businesses encroaching on sidewalks and pedestrian walkways for trading in the Son Tra night market area (Mai Hac De and Ly Nam De streets), and other key tourist routes such as Nguyen Cong Tru, Ho Nghinh, and Ha Bong.
Notably, in areas with a high concentration of tourists, the city has posted signs prohibiting street vending and soliciting customers, but this practice still occurs on some streets.
It is no coincidence that during the recent peak summer season (the time of the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival 2025), the number of visitors served by Da Nang's tourism accommodation establishments reached nearly 1.88 million, an increase of 26% compared to the DIFF 2024 season (from June 8th to July 13th, 2024), including nearly 770,000 international visitors and nearly 1.11 million domestic visitors.
This is the result of the efforts of the city government, the tourism industry, and the business community in continuously organizing domestic and international events and festivals to attract tourists.
However, for Da Nang to become an attractive destination, in addition to the city government and tourism businesses, the cooperation of the local community is also needed. Sharing positive images of the people and the environment of the tourist destination is an effective way to invite and attract visitors.
Therefore, in addition to research efforts, expanding the domestic and international tourist market, and developing new tourism products, the tourism industry needs to continue implementing measures to ensure a safe tourism environment; prevent harassment and soliciting of tourists, etc.
And importantly, every citizen, small business owner, and service provider must always be conscious of preserving the destination, considering themselves as tourism ambassadors; only then can Da Nang tourism develop sustainably.
