During a field survey conducted with the leaders of the Veterans Association of Yen Phuc commune in early June 2026, we observed that many households had developed the habit of sorting, collecting, and disposing of household waste at home. The residential areas, village roads, and alleys were kept clean, and littering was no longer a problem.
At the home of Mr. Do Xuan Chieu in Ban Sam village, the incinerator is built in a corner of the garden, far from the family's living area. Mr. Chieu shared: "Since having the incinerator, my family has been more proactive in sorting and disposing of daily household waste. Everyone in the family has also raised their awareness of maintaining environmental hygiene, and the house grounds are always cleaner and tidier than before."
According to local residents, in the past, handling household waste in many residential areas of the commune faced considerable difficulties due to the large area and scattered population, while waste collection and transportation were not truly convenient, leading some people to not pay enough attention to waste disposal. Recognizing that this situation affected environmental protection and the achievement of environmental targets in the new rural development program, in 2019, the Veterans Association of the commune discussed and agreed to implement a model of household waste incinerators.
Mr. Ha Van Tue, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Yen Phuc commune and Chairman of the Veterans Association of Yen Phuc commune, said: "Previously, the handling of household waste in some residential areas faced many difficulties, affecting the environment and rural landscape. Based on this reality, the Veterans Association of the commune mobilized cadres and members to contribute funds to build household waste incinerators with a contribution of 50,000 VND per cadre and 10,000 VND per member, while also mobilizing people to participate in the construction. Thanks to the consensus of members and the people, the model is increasingly being replicated."
The construction cost for each incinerator is only about 300,000 VND. To date, the Veterans Association of the commune has mobilized resources to build nearly 600 household waste incinerators in the villages throughout the area, with a total cost of nearly 200 million VND. Building on the success achieved, the association aims to build 30 more incinerators in Ban Thi village by the end of this year.
Despite its small scale, the model has yielded quite noticeable results. Mr. Banh Van Dan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Phuc commune, assessed: Household waste incinerators not only help people dispose of household waste at the source but also contribute to changing awareness and forming habits of proper waste collection, sorting, and disposal. As a result, the problem of indiscriminate waste dumping is gradually reduced, and the rural landscape is becoming greener, cleaner, and more beautiful.
To ensure the model's sustainable effectiveness, the Veterans Association members regularly promote and encourage people to use waste incinerators correctly. They also actively promote and encourage members and the public to adopt a civilized lifestyle in residential areas. The branches regularly coordinate the cleaning of village roads and alleys, clearing drainage ditches, clearing overgrown bushes, and participating in activities to build a green, clean, and beautiful rural landscape. Notably, each Veterans Association member in the commune takes the lead in implementing and spreading these practices to other households in the village and commune.
Despite the relatively small investment, the incinerators built through the joint efforts of veteran association members and the local people have yielded practical results in maintaining environmental hygiene in residential areas. In the future, the Yen Phuc Commune Veteran Association will continue to mobilize resources to build incinerators in the remaining villages, thereby contributing to improving environmental standards and building an increasingly clean, green, and beautiful rural landscape.
