The company was founded in 2021 by two former OpenAI executives, Dario Amodei and his sister, Daniela Amodei. Many former OpenAI researchers also joined Anthropic's founding team. In early 2023, Anthropic was valued at $4.1 billion. In April, Google invested $300 million in Anthropic and acquired a 10% stake.
In addition to Google, Anthropic also received funding from Salesforce and Zoom.
Anthropic is the company behind Claude 2, a chatbot that competes with ChatGPT. Claude 2 can summarize text up to approximately 75,000 words, the length of a book. Users can input large datasets and ask the chatbot to summarize them in the form of memos, letters, or stories. Meanwhile, ChatGPT can only handle around 3,000 words.
In July, Daniela Amodei stated that Anthropic had spent at least two months developing its latest chatbot, with a team of 30-35 people working directly on the AI model and a total of 150 people providing support.
According to research by the machine learning monitoring platform Arthur AI, Claude 2 is the most reliable chatbot in terms of self-awareness, meaning its ability to accurately assess what it knows and doesn't know. Additionally, Claude 2 only answers questions for which it has training data.
Anthropic was also among the four companies invited to a meeting at the White House to discuss the development of responsible AI with US Vice President Kamala Harris. Subsequently, Anthropic raised $450 million in May.
Previously, Amazon also invested $4 billion in Anthropic to compete in AI development. The increasing investment shows that cloud computing companies are striving to secure partnerships with AI startups as AI becomes the new trend in the technology industry. According to some experts, in the future, AI companies will be an important customer group for the cloud computing giants.
