Google announced it will add 110 more languages to Google Translate, bringing the total number of translated languages to 243. This is considered a major step forward for Google Translate.
Among the newly added languages, Google particularly highlighted Cantonese. Google stated that Cantonese had been requested by many users for a long time, but because the language has many similarities to Mandarin, they spent a significant amount of time searching for data to train their translation model.
In addition, Google also added many African languages, accounting for a quarter of the total number of new languages added.
According to a Google report, 110 new languages represent 614 million people of diverse ethnicities around the world . Some languages are still spoken by around 100 million people, while others are spoken by very few, or even have disappeared.
Adding rare languages to its translation system is also part of Google's effort to preserve human culture.
These new languages are powered by an artificial intelligence language model developed by Google called AI PaLM 2. AI PaLM 2 not only has translation capabilities, but it can also quickly learn related languages, such as Hindi being similar to Awahdi or French being related to Mauritanian Ceole.
Currently, Google Translate is the translation tool that supports the most languages and has the most modern features.
