Previously, users needed a Google account to use Gemini's web interface. However, they can now visit gemini.google.com without signing in and can even chat anonymously.
Gemini user interface without login
Google's rule change marks a major step toward making artificial intelligence (AI) technology more accessible, allowing most people to experience the capabilities of Gemini AI without providing personal information.
The difference when using Gemini without logging in
When using this mode, the chat interface remains the same with some prompts to get users started. However, there are some slight differences in personalization. For example, the greeting "Hello, [your name]" has been replaced with the more anonymous "Meet Gemini, your personal AI assistant."
Not only that, but users who aren't logged in will still face some limitations. They'll only be able to use the default Gemini 2.0 Flash model. While the model picker still shows other options like "2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental)," "Deep Research," and "Personalization (experimental)," accessing those features will require logging in. Features like file uploads and chat history are also only available to those with a Google account, as they require data storage and syncing.
AI Chatbot Gemini Calls Humans 'Cosmic Stain', Makes Malicious Threats
This is a similar strategy to what OpenAI has used with ChatGPT, allowing users to experience the chatbot without logging in. However, the Android version of the Gemini app still requires a Google account to function. Removing the web login requirement opens the door for more users to try out Gemini without having to join the company's ecosystem.
