Google opens its doors to third-party Android app stores.

Google Play drastically reduces commission fees, inviting competitors to sell apps on its home turf without creating the same difficulties as before.

The immense pressure from antitrust lawsuits and regulators ultimately forced Google to back down. Instead of defending its old pricing model, the search giant seems to be proactively reshaping its entire ecosystem to prepare for a post-monopoly era, where openness is paramount, and of course, everything is still within their calculations.

Get rid of those towering roses.

The most significant change lies in the fee structure. Google announced it would cut the familiar standard 30% fee to just 20% on most purchases on the Play Store.

Google has removed restrictions on third-party Android app stores.

Furthermore, for developers participating in the App Experience or Google Play Games Level Up programs (for mobile games), the cost of new installations will be drastically reduced to 15%. In particular, the cost for subscription services will now be only 10%.

This new structure is also flexible across jurisdictions. Specifically, in the US, UK, and the European Economic Area (EEA), Google will only charge a 5% service fee if developers use the company's payment tools, while allowing market-based pricing in other regions.

Opening the door to payment systems and competitors.

This concession follows the high-profile 2025 agreement between Google and Epic Games (the creator of the blockbuster game Fortnite ). Notably, instead of waiting for the final court ruling, Google proactively gave the green light. Developers now have the right to integrate their own payment systems alongside Google's, or link to external payment gateways, a stark contrast to Apple's policy.

In addition, after years of legal battles, Epic Games immediately planned to bring Fortnite back to Google Play globally following this announcement.

Accept third-party app marketplaces.

The biggest surprise was Google's launch of the Registered App Stores program. For the first time, Android created a legitimate pathway for rival app stores to operate.

Third-party stores that pass Google's quality and security checks will be provided with a smooth, user-friendly installation interface, no less impressive than the Play Store. Conversely, the old-fashioned manual APK installation method for unregistered apps will become more complicated and cumbersome, with numerous warnings. Through this move, Google gains the reputation of opening up while simultaneously legitimizing its competitors, making it easier to maintain control over the entire ecosystem.

This revolution won't happen overnight. The new fee structure will be implemented in the EEA, the UK, and the US before June 30th, expanding to Australia on September 30th and to South Korea and Japan later this year. The changes won't be fully implemented globally until September 2027.

These changes will undoubtedly reshape Android's competitive landscape. Lower fees and increased payment flexibility are like a refreshing rain shower, a welcome relief for developers who have grown weary of years of rigidity.
