Android 16 has been rolled out to Google's Pixel smartphone lineup. The release also adds group chat to RCS, AI-powered edit suggestions to Google Photos, and business badge support in Google Wallet. The release also focuses on better accessibility support and improved customization for messages and contacts.

In addition to Android 16, Google also announced upgrades as part of its regular feature update for eligible Pixel phones, called “Pixel Drop.” Android 16 now features iOS-style live notifications on the lock screen for real-time updates and Google’s new Material 3 Expressive design language.

There are new capabilities to protect against theft and fraud, along with updated advanced protection to maintain security and privacy for public figures.

Android 16 also adds support for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio devices so you can use them instead of your phone's mic for better call quality. You can also control the volume on your device from your phone using new native controls.

Google says that Android 16 will bring desktop-style windowing support to Android tablets later this year. The company also plans to introduce custom shortcuts that will let you define your own app search actions through hotkey combinations.

For Android 16 and other supported releases of Android, Google is rolling out an update to Google Messages that adds RCS group chat support. You'll be able to choose a custom icon and mute notifications for specific conversations for a set amount of time.

Android 16 also brings HDR screenshots, adaptive refresh rates, and mandatory notification grouping to reduce clutter in the notification shade. Google Photos has a bunch of new features and other supported releases. Soon, the app will be able to suggest editing tools like deleting, moving, or “recreating” parts of an image.

Other Android improvements include the ability to mark favorite devices in the Google Home app and support for paying for public transit using Google Wallet on Wear OS devices, so you don't have to take out your phone.

Along with the new Android 16 release, Google is rolling out its latest set of monthly Pixel feature upgrades. A new “Pixel VIPs” widget lets you see interactions with favorites in your contacts list. It shows your most recent calls and messages with that person, including any calls and messages you received from WhatsApp, as well as updates like birthdays and locations if the contact chooses to share them.

Pixel phones also have more detailed captions for video content, including live streams. For example, you'll see captions describing whether someone is whispering, yawning, or clearing their throat.

Elsewhere, you can create custom stickers with text prompts directly from Google's Gboard keyboard. Google is adding support for AI-powered captions in French and German to the Recorder app. And users in Australia will get Android's Emergency SOS satellite connectivity feature.

Google is adding a battery health indicator to Pixel 8a and newer Pixel devices (but not the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro), and Pixel 5 and later devices will get a new accessibility feature through the Magnifier app. You can use Magnifier to describe what you're looking for, and then the app will highlight the item if there's a match and give you haptic feedback.

Enterprise Android users are also getting updates, including the ability to store their company badges in Google Wallet. They can also use Google's Gemini chatbot in the Google Docs app on Android to summarize content, get detailed information, and translate text. Finally, Google is improving Chrome's PDF handling on Android by viewing linked documents.
