In response to the movement to combat plastic waste launched by the Vietnam Women's Union, the Women's Union at all levels in the province has implemented many innovative and practical models and approaches, creating a widespread impact in the community. A highlight is the "Green House" model, a simple initiative that yields dual benefits: protecting the environment while simultaneously supporting those in difficult circumstances.
According to Nguyen Thi Hong Ha, Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union, the model is designed simply but scientifically , placed in a convenient location so that members and residents can easily sort and dispose of recyclable waste such as plastic bottles, scrap paper, cans, scrap metal, etc., inside. When the "house" is full, the branches will sort, collect, and sell the waste to raise funds. Besides the financial support, the most important benefit of the model is that it has contributed to fostering a sense of saving, preventing waste, and protecting the environment in each family.

Through small actions, people's awareness has gradually changed. While previously waste was often discarded mixed together, many families now proactively sort it at the source. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thanh (Hamlet 4, Nam Trach Commune) shared: “Sorting waste has now become a daily habit for my family. After use, plastic bottles and beer cans are collected and brought to the 'Green House' near our home. Instead of throwing them away, we now see that waste can be useful. It keeps our house and neighborhood clean, and also helps those in need, so everyone is enthusiastic about participating.”
The "Green House" model is considered a highlight in the environmental protection movement in Dong Son ward. Ms. Phan Thi Hai Yen, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Dong Son ward, said: "The model has attracted a large number of members and residents, from women and youth to students. The idea is very simple but brings double benefits. Recyclable waste is collected, helping to keep the environment clean and creating a meaningful fund to support poor students and disadvantaged women. From seemingly worthless waste materials, the women have transformed them into gifts full of kindness."
Meanwhile, Le Thi Huong, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Cam Lo commune, shared, "The 'Green House' initiative has created a vibrant emulation movement among all levels of the union, actively contributing to the reduction of plastic waste. Through concrete and practical actions, women are contributing to building a green, clean, and beautiful living environment, preserving the green planet for future generations."
Along with the "Green House" model, in recent times, women's associations at all levels in the province have implemented many practical models, such as: "Green Sunday," "Green Garbage Pit," "Turning Waste into Money," building self-managed flower-lined roads, sorting waste at source, collecting waste along the coast... Through these close and persistent actions, women's associations at all levels are increasingly affirming their core role in forming and spreading a green, environmentally friendly lifestyle.
To date, the entire province has built and maintained more than 1,590 "Green Houses" in villages, residential areas, schools, and community centers. Over the past five years, through the collection and sale of scrap materials, women's associations at all levels have raised over 3 billion VND to carry out social welfare activities. Accordingly, more than 152,000 disadvantaged women and children have received support in various forms, such as: providing livelihoods, scholarships, essential supplies, and emergency assistance.
“From a small model, the ‘Green House’ has been spreading strongly, becoming a pillar of compassion. There, every plastic bottle, every scrap of paper is no longer waste, but becomes a ‘brick’ contributing to building a civilized, humane, and sustainable community. This also proves the important role of women in the family and social life, those who directly organize activities, care for the lives and education of their children. When women’s awareness and actions change, the positive impact spreads quickly to every family and residential area,” emphasized Nguyen Thi Hong Ha, Vice President of the Provincial Women’s Union.
