Hero La Van Cau during his lifetime - Photo: NAM TRAN
During the Battle of Dong Khe in 1950, a young Tay ethnic soldier asked his comrades to cut off his right arm, which had been shattered by gunfire, so that it wouldn't hinder him from continuing to carry explosives and charge forward to attack the bunker, clearing the way for his unit's assault.
That image has become a symbol of the willpower and courage of the soldiers in the heroic resistance war.
He recounted the battle situation in a simple, straightforward manner: "The bullets hit my right arm and right cheek. When I regained consciousness, one side of my body was numb, my right arm was dangling, and my right cheek was missing. Thinking of my mission, I tried to get up and find the explosives, but it was very difficult to walk. I turned back to find someone to help me cut off my arm so I could continue my mission..."
What is valuable is that the heroic example of La Van Cau continues to shine brightly even in his later years. Bearing lifelong disabilities, he returned to a simple life like everyone else.
He studied, worked, met with young people, recounted stories of the war, and was so humble that he was almost quiet.
That is why, when people mention La Van Cau, they remember not only the arm left on the battlefield but also, and even more so, a hero who lived a simple, sincere life and quietly dedicated himself to serving others.
These days, young people across the country are looking forward to the 13th National Congress of the Youth Union with aspirations to contribute and take control of their future.
Each generation has a different historical context. What remains invaluable is the spirit of putting the nation first. While the older generation contributed with courage on the battlefield, today's generation contributes with knowledge, labor, creativity, and the aspiration to develop the country.
A scientist persistently pursuing their research, an engineer mastering technology, a doctor dedicated to their patients, a teacher wholeheartedly devoted to their students, or an entrepreneur creating products that benefit society...
They are all contributing to the enrichment of the country through their professional responsibilities. That is how patriotism is continued in peacetime.
Modern society offers many paths for young people to become famous. Individual ego is emphasized, extravagant lifestyles, quick money-making, and even "heroic" behavior reminiscent of "internet gangsters" are still praised by many young people, resulting in a surge in likes...
A quiet life, dedicated to long-term, sustainable values, does not seem to be the preferred choice for many young people today.
However, life always has its own measure. The most enduring value for young people, ultimately recognized by society, is how they treat their work, their people, and their country.
Hero La Van Cau once shared that as long as his heart was still beating, he still wanted to contribute.
Remembering La Van Cau is not only about recalling a hero, but also about reinforcing the belief that a nation will always be strong and enduring when each generation knows how to live for things greater than themselves...
