In Norway's 4-1 victory over Iraq in Group I of the 2026 World Cup on June 17th, Haaland was the standout star. The Manchester City striker scored two goals in the first 43 minutes, playing a major role in helping the Nordic team secure all three points in their opening match.
Haaland's goals helped the striker make history as the first Norwegian male player to score more than one goal in a World Cup match. Furthermore, this was also Haaland's 11th consecutive match scoring for the national team, starting in November 2024. In that streak, the 25-year-old striker has been directly involved in 25 goals.
Both of Haaland's goals bore the hallmarks of a true "killer." His ability to choose his position and seize opportunities allowed him to constantly put the Iraqi defense on high alert.
Following the victory against Iraq, Haaland increased his tally to 57 goals in 51 appearances for the Norwegian national team, surpassing legends Samuel Eto'o and Gabriel Batistuta, who both have 56 goals for their country.
With his fearsome goal-scoring record maintained at both club and national team levels, Haaland is showing that he is one of the leading contenders for the Golden Boot award at the 2026 World Cup.
