Faced with the imminent collapse of the "special war" and the need to replace the puppet regime's "leader" midway through the process, from 1964 onwards, the US imperialists massively deployed expeditionary troops to the South, then fabricated the "Gulf of Tonkin incident" to escalate their attacks on the North.
In early 1965, vital transportation routes, especially crucial road and rail infrastructure connecting Thanh Hoa province, became "hot spots" for the US Air Force.
On April 3rd and 4th, 1965, the army and people of the Ham Rong-Nam Ngan area bravely repelled air raids, shooting down and destroying 31 American aircraft, contributing to the efforts of the entire province's army and people to eliminate 47 "thunderbolts" and "ghosts" that violated the northern airspace in an attempt to "cut off" vital transportation routes.

The delegates reminisced about those arduous yet heroic days. |
At the meeting, delegates and historical witnesses recalled the days of tenacious fighting and service in defending the Ham Rong Bridge, the spirit of coordinated combat, especially the militia members in the Ham Rong-Nam Ngan area who both served in combat and fought directly, bravely sacrificing themselves in the posture of "aiming straight at the enemy and shooting," or the teachers and students who sacrificed their lives while reinforcing and building the dike of the Ma River.
During the 7 years and 6 months of both production and direct combat, the army and people of Thanh Hoa shot down 117 American aircraft and captured many enemy pilots. The Ham Rong victory further enhanced the miraculous " Dien Bien Phu in the air," joining the army and people of the whole country in crushing the American imperialists' plot to "return the North to the Stone Age."
