According to information from the Price Management Department ( Ministry of Finance ), during the Lunar New Year holiday of the Year of the Horse 2026, the commodity market and prices remained basically stable. The circulation of goods proceeded smoothly.

No major price fluctuations.

The peak shopping season for the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse) took place from the 23rd to the 28th of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Snake, with shopping volume at supermarkets and shopping malls increasing by 30-50% compared to normal days. Product categories experiencing a significant increase in consumption included fresh food, groceries, confectionery, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, fresh flowers, gifts, and ornamental plants.

During this period, prices of some fresh food items increased slightly by 5-10% as usual, but supply remained secure. Thanks to abundant supply and early preparation of stockpiling plans, prices of basic goods remained stable, with no shortages or price spikes, and the market operated safely and balanced. By the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Snake (2015), purchasing power decreased as most needs had been met; e-commerce and delivery activities almost came to a standstill due to transportation workers taking Tet holiday; many flower and ornamental plant vendors reduced prices by 20-50% to clear their inventory.

According to the Price Management Department's summary, prices of essential consumer goods before Tet (Lunar New Year) remained largely stable. Prices of some goods increased slightly, mainly fresh flowers, fruits, some livestock, poultry, seafood, and vegetables. Prices of other essential goods at supermarkets and shopping malls remained basically stable. Regarding food items, in January 2026, rice prices tended to increase at the beginning of the month due to increased demand during the Tet preparations, but stabilized by the end of the month.

Prices of vegetables in most localities remained stable, similar to normal days, and even slightly decreased in some areas due to the recovery of supply after the impact of storms and floods at the end of 2025. Prices of dried food items remained stable. Prices of fresh eggs decreased slightly due to stable supply and no significant increase in consumer demand. For processed food items such as jams, candies, sugar, cooking oil, etc., prices were relatively stable, with some items experiencing a slight increase. Although demand for fresh flowers and ornamental plants remained high during Tet, the warm weather this year allowed flowers to bloom quickly, resulting in reasonable prices, not as expensive as in previous years.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Ngo Tri Long, former Director of the Price and Market Research Institute (Ministry of Finance), the goods market during the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 will have a proactive supply, slightly increased purchasing power, and more stable prices compared to the same period last year. The most positive aspect of the Lunar New Year of the Horse is the price movement. The consumer price index (CPI) in January 2026 increased very slightly compared to December 2025 (up 0.05%), while the increase was significantly higher in the same period last year; compared to the same period, the CPI increased by 2.53%. This shows that inflationary pressure during the Tet holiday is lower, the overall price level is generally "stable," and there is no widespread wave of price increases.

Besides market management and organizational factors, the decrease in some input cost groups (especially transportation) also contributed to reducing the ripple effect on the prices of goods and services. This is not only a positive sign for people's lives during the important holiday season, but also an indicator that market management, price stabilization, and ensuring supply-demand balance have become more systematic, making an important contribution to maintaining macroeconomic stability from the early months of the year.

Vietnamese products are on the rise.

According to the Price Management Department, the clear trend in the 2026 Tet holiday market is that domestically produced goods are gradually dominating the shelves of retail stores and supermarket chains. The most popular items purchased by consumers during Tet remain Tet cakes, candies, jams, fruit baskets, fashion items, cosmetics, wine, beer, and various nuts…

From the end of 2025, many localities have been proactively and flexibly implementing solutions to stabilize market prices and carrying out the Market Stabilization Program for food and agricultural products in their areas. Accordingly, in many localities, distribution systems such as supermarkets, markets, convenience stores, etc., participating in the stabilization program have proactively stockpiled goods, increasing their reserves by about 25-50% compared to normal days. For example, in Ho Chi Minh City, the amount of stabilized goods accounts for 23-43% of market demand, sufficient to influence and guide market prices, preventing shortages and price spikes; in Hanoi, businesses have proactively prepared goods with an average increase of 10-40% compared to the plan to serve the 2025 Tet holiday, with Vietnamese goods accounting for about 80-90%...

Notably, this is the first year the Ministry of Industry and Trade has organized a large-scale Spring Fair at the Vietnam Exhibition and Convention Center (VEC) with the theme "Connecting Prosperity - Welcoming a Glorious Spring". The event attracted approximately 500,000 visitors, including many international delegations from India, South Korea, Japan, China, the Philippines, Belgium, etc., who came to learn about products and explore cooperation opportunities. According to Mr. Vu Ba Phu, Director of the Trade Promotion Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the success of the fair lies not only in transforming from a purely shopping space to a genuine trading space but also in elevating Vietnamese products through experiential activities and connections between manufacturers, distributors, and consumers.

To strengthen management and control efforts to stabilize market prices during the 2026 Lunar New Year, the Ministry of Finance has deployed four working groups to several localities. Notably, in the context of administrative area mergers, local finance departments have promptly advised provincial People's Committees to amend, supplement, and issue decisions on the assignment and decentralization of price management in their respective areas according to regulations. This ensures the unified and synchronized implementation of price policies and laws from the central to local levels, contributing to improved efficiency and transparency in state price management, and helping to control inflation and stabilize the macroeconomy.

According to Dr. Nguyen Duc Do, Deputy Director of the Institute of Economics and Finance (Academy of Finance), the CPI forecast for 2026 could increase by an average of about 0.3% per month, with the total increase for the whole year around 3.5% (with a fluctuation range of about ±0.5%). Although inflationary pressure for the whole year of 2026 is not too great, complacency is necessary in management. In particular, close and coordinated cooperation between fiscal and monetary policies is needed to ensure both high growth targets are achieved and inflation is kept below the 4-4.5% threshold set by the National Assembly.
