Da Nang: At least two tons of dead fish in the Phu Loc River and Trung Nghia 1 Lake have been collected and disposed of at the Khanh Son landfill following the first rains of the season.
Many canals and lakes in Thanh Khe and Lien Chieu districts are experiencing fish deaths, with scum floating on the water and a foul odor. On July 15th, the Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company collected nearly 500 kg of dead fish with white bellies from the Phu Loc River in Thanh Khe district; on July 17th, they collected over 1.5 tons from the Trung Nghia 1 regulating lake in Lien Chieu district.
On July 19th, dead fish were found scattered in the Da Co canal, near Chon Tam 6 road, Lien Chieu district, totaling approximately 50 kg, mostly tilapia.

Mr. Huynh Trung Nhan, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company, said that the company had sent staff to inspect the entire route but did not detect any illegal discharge. The fish deaths may be due to low water levels in canals and lakes during the hot season, reducing oxygen levels in the water. On July 15-16, Da Nang experienced heavy rain, causing rainwater and wastewater to overflow and infiltrate lakes and canals through discharge points, resulting in sudden changes in the water environment.
Explaining the appearance of green scum in many canals, a company representative said it was due to the growth of blue-green algae. Workers have now collected the algae and treated the areas where fish died with chemicals to improve the landscape.

The company has also taken water samples from these areas for analysis and assessment of the specific cause, while closely monitoring the water quality in canals, rivers, and lakes in the area.
