Mrs. Ngo Thi Lieu was born in 1936 in Ha Tinh province. During the war against the US , while her husband was often away on duty, Mrs. Lieu single-handedly managed the household, farm, and raised her young children, while actively participating in revolutionary activities and local movements. For these contributions, she was honored with the Third-Class Resistance Medal, and her husband received the First-Class Resistance Medal.
When Mrs. Lieu was 49 years old, her husband passed away. She single-handedly raised seven children amidst the many hardships of the country. Recalling the past, she still remembers the days of wartime bombings, the meals of potatoes and cassava mixed in to feed her children. Despite the difficulties, she always strived to care for and raise her children to be good people. Her strictness, yet full of love, molded her children into useful members of society.
As her children grew up, six out of seven moved to Can Tho to live and work. To care for and support their mother, in 1991, her children brought her from Ha Tinh to Can Tho, where she has lived ever since. Now at the age of 90, Mrs. Lieu is happy that her children and grandchildren have grown up and achieved success. Her family is a shining example of a studious spirit and a model cultural family in the locality.
Of the seven children, six graduated from university. All have stable lives. Currently, the family has many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Among them, 10 grandchildren have university degrees. Ten members of the extended family are Party members. Not only do they preserve the family traditions and promote a love of learning, but the family also actively supports and participates in social movements and charitable activities in the locality. The family was once awarded a certificate of commendation by the People's Committee of Hung Loi Ward (formerly) for "The family lineage has made positive contributions to the promotion of education and talent."
She currently lives with her youngest son and his wife, while her other children live nearby for convenience in caring for her. After she fell and developed mobility problems, her children have taken turns caring for her, ensuring someone is always by her side day and night. Each month, her children also contribute to a common fund to cover her living expenses and medication.
During Tet (Lunar New Year), anniversaries, or birthday celebrations, the old woman's small house is filled with laughter and conversation as her children and grandchildren gather from many places. Especially during Tet, the whole family gathers to make banh chung (traditional rice cakes), prepare traditional dishes, and exchange New Year's greetings... Recently, the family celebrated Mrs. Lieu's 90th birthday.
Mr. Dang Van Thai, the youngest son of Mrs. Lieu, shared: “My mother loved her children and grandchildren very much, but she was also strict in teaching us to uphold family traditions, to respect elders, to love and support each other, and to do what is right and just. Throughout her life, she worked hard for her children and grandchildren, so my siblings and I always wanted to give her the best. Although she lived with my wife and me, my siblings and I often visited and helped her. When she was sick or unwell, there was always someone by her side to take care of her.”
Grandma Lieu shared her feelings: “Having gone through so many ups and downs, joys and sorrows in life, I am now very relieved that my children and grandchildren live in a peaceful and stable country, not having to suffer from war like our generation did. My children and grandchildren are all striving to study, work, and live useful lives for society. My family is harmonious, and my siblings and I get along well and love each other. That is my greatest happiness!”
The family of Mrs. Ngo Thi Lieu is a living testament to the saying "A harmonious family brings prosperity." Their family traditions, love of learning, and close-knit bond between generations are not only a source of pride for the lineage but also contribute to spreading positive cultural values within the community.
