Thanks to the attention of the Party and the State, the infrastructure of Meo Vac town is becoming increasingly spacious and modern.

As a mountainous border district of Ha Giang province, Meo Vac has a natural area of ​​57,668.61 hectares, comprising 18 administrative units at the commune and town level, with 17 ethnic groups living together, of which ethnic minorities account for 97.64% of the total population of the district.

Annually, based on allocated capital and aligned with socio -economic development orientations, the district integrates resources from national target programs such as: New Rural Development; Sustainable Poverty Reduction; Socio-economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas giai đoạn 2021-2025, into infrastructure construction, transportation, and socio-economic development support... in ethnic minority areas, especially in particularly difficult communes and border communes.

Accordingly, Meo Vac district has implemented 8 projects to extend electricity to villages without access to the national power grid, raising the percentage of households using electricity to over 90%; renovated and upgraded 13 school buildings to meet national standards; repaired and upgraded 100% of health stations in the communes; and upgraded and paved 25 out of 28 internal and inter-village roads with concrete.

The progress of investment and implementation of infrastructure projects has reached over 70% of the target for the 2020-2025 period. To date, all 18 communes and towns have paved roads leading to their centers; all 199 villages and residential areas have roads accessible by motorized vehicles to their headquarters, creating favorable conditions for people to travel, produce, and exchange goods, contributing to economic development and fundamentally changing the face of the villages and hamlets.

Besides investing in infrastructure, Meo Vac district also focuses on ensuring social welfare and creating stable livelihoods for the people: The district has built 5 centralized water supply projects with a total cost of nearly 15 billion VND; supported 1,195 water tanks for disadvantaged households lacking access to clean water; supported vocational retraining for 105 households lacking land for production; and supported 1,850 ethnic minority workers in accessing labor market information and job search and connection services.

In addition, Meo Vac district has implemented 59 poverty reduction projects and models, benefiting 1,174 households with a total budget of over 39 billion VND; implemented 25 production development support projects benefiting 380 households with a total budget of nearly 14 billion VND; provided support to 554 poor and near-poor households for building new houses; and supported 99 poor and near-poor households in repairing their houses in 18 communes and towns…

Currently, in Meo Vac district, there are two ethnic groups belonging to the very small ethnic minority group: the Lo Lo and the Co Lao. Implementing the Project to Support Socio-Economic Development of Very Small Ethnic Minorities in the period 2016-2025 (according to Decision 2086, dated October 31, 2016, of the Prime Minister), Meo Vac district has provided support in the form of seeds, materials, and fertilizers to 103 households with a budget of 412 million VND; support in the form of livestock and barns to 103 households with a budget of 2.06 billion VND; support in the purchase of ethnic costumes for 176 households with a budget of 352 million VND; and support in the organization of traditional festivals in 4 villages with a budget of 220 million VND.

Along with policies and programs supporting economic development, the district pays special attention to the preservation of the culture of ethnic minorities. Through various measures to support and encourage ethnic minorities to maintain their beautiful traditional cultural features, such as: restoring traditional festivals; investing in and building cultural institutions and community centers; supporting the activities of village performing arts groups, etc.

Mr. Nong Van Ngay, Head of the Ethnic Affairs Department of Meo Vac District, informed: Last June, the 4th Congress of Ethnic Minority Representatives of Meo Vac District set out tasks and solutions for implementing ethnic affairs and ethnic policies for the period 2024-2029. These include focusing on creating strong improvements in the material and spiritual lives of ethnic minorities in the area; emphasizing the work of arranging and stabilizing the population, and establishing permanent settlements; focusing on resolving difficulties related to housing, clean water, and improving environmental sanitation; raising the level of education and cultural enjoyment of the people; preserving and promoting the cultural identity and fine traditions of each ethnic group; eliminating outdated customs and practices; and building a team of ethnic minority cadres at the grassroots level with the qualities and capabilities to meet the requirements of the new period.

With the attention of the Party and State, and the active involvement of local Party committees and authorities, from 2019 to 2023, over 10,513 jobs were created, and the rate of trained workers reached 53%. By the end of 2023, the average per capita income reached 32 million VND/person/year (an increase of more than 11 million VND compared to 2022), and the number of poor households in the entire district was 9,035, accounting for 51.29% (a decrease of 6.3% compared to the end of 2022).

Mr. Nguyen Huy Sac, Chairman of the People's Committee of Meo Vac District, said: "In the coming time, Meo Vac District will continue to review and assess the current state of economic life, vocational training needs, and employment to have a basis for formulating appropriate policies that are feasible and closely aligned with actual conditions. At the same time, Meo Vac District will effectively utilize investment resources and support from programs and projects for ethnic minority areas; strengthen the leadership role of local Party committees and authorities; enhance inspection, supervision, and evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and projects to promptly address difficulties and obstacles; and regularly coordinate closely between all levels and sectors to continue effectively implementing ethnic affairs and ethnic policies."
