The effectiveness of introducing new rice varieties into production.

QTO - In the context of agricultural production being increasingly affected by climate change, testing and restoring new rice varieties is becoming an important direction to improve productivity, quality, and economic efficiency. In many localities throughout the province, the new rice varieties introduced into production are initially showing positive signs, opening up expectations for a more sustainable rice production system…

Testing suitable rice varieties

According to Nguyen Hong Linh, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Phu Xa Agricultural Cooperative, Dong Thuan Ward, this year's winter-spring crop saw the cooperative cultivate 65 hectares of rice, primarily using varieties such as QC03 and VN20. Recognizing that selecting the right variety and crop structure is crucial for rice production efficiency, Phu Xa Cooperative has chosen new varieties suitable for each region, with good resistance to weather, climate, pests, and diseases.

“Introduced for trial cultivation at the cooperative about 3 years ago, during the production process, we noticed that the QC03 rice variety has many outstanding advantages compared to other rice varieties. Previously, farmers in the cooperative also planted many other rice varieties on these fields. However, most of the high-yielding varieties did not produce good quality rice, but QC03 produces delicious rice with high yield. This is a promising rice variety for expanding cultivation area and replacing low -economic- efficiency and degenerated rice varieties…,” Mr. Nguyen Hong Linh informed.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Linh, the QCO3 rice variety has excellent pest and disease resistance. The growth period from planting to harvest is approximately 115 days for the winter-spring crop and about 90 days for the summer-autumn crop. On QC03 fields, the rice is less susceptible to dangerous pests and diseases such as brown planthopper and blast disease. The yield of the QC03 rice variety is higher than other varieties, averaging 60 quintals/hectare. This winter-spring crop, the QC03 rice variety at the cooperative is estimated to achieve a yield of over 65 quintals/hectare.

This winter-spring season, Loc Long Agricultural Production, Business and Service Cooperative in Truong Ninh commune (Loc Long Cooperative) is implementing a 20-hectare cultivation of HD16 rice variety using a production chain model that reduces emissions. HD16 is considered a specialty fragrant rice variety, a high-quality rice, and is geared towards export. This variety also has good resistance to climate change.

According to Nguyen Van Thom, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Loc Long Cooperative, initial production assessments show that the HD16 rice variety yields 10-15% more than common varieties. This not only helps increase people's income but also contributes to diversifying the rice variety structure in the locality.

“The synchronized application of scientific and technological advancements, such as sowing, rational fertilizer use, and pest management, has also contributed to improving the effectiveness of new rice varieties. Previously, at Loc Long Cooperative, farmers used other rice varieties for production, but the yield and output were not high. Currently, despite the unpredictable weather patterns, the new HD16 rice variety continues to grow and develop stably. This is considered an important factor in the context of agricultural production having to adapt to increasingly evident climate change…,” Mr. Thom added.

Scaling up the model, aiming for sustainable production.

According to Nguyen Xuan Ky, Director of Quang Binh Seed Company Limited, in recent years, the company has focused on researching and restoring rice varieties suitable for climate change conditions, such as those with short growing seasons, resistance to adverse external conditions, and high yield and quality; especially focusing on high-quality rice varieties to solve the problem of market access for farmers throughout the province…

“For the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop season, the company has introduced many new varieties such as QC03, QC11... These varieties have a short growing-to-harvest period, good resistance to pests and diseases, as well as excellent drought and salinity tolerance, serving the production of two crops, bringing efficiency to farmers. In the future, the company will continue to introduce new rice varieties to serve the crop conversion process, especially drought-resistant, short-day, high-yield, and high-quality varieties, serving the product consumption needs of farmers in the province…,” Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky informed.

Introducing new rice varieties for testing is not only a solution to improve productivity and quality, but also a necessary step towards restructuring the agricultural sector towards modernity, efficiency, and sustainability. With the determination of the agricultural sector and the consensus of the people, these new rice varieties promise to make a significant contribution to ensuring food security and improving the economic efficiency for farmers…

Based on initial trial results, Quang Binh Seed Company Limited has now introduced approximately 2,000 hectares of QC03 rice variety, 500 hectares of QC11 rice variety, 50 hectares of HD16 rice variety, and about 500 hectares of KH805 rice variety into production in localities throughout the province. Currently, the company and relevant agencies are continuing to comprehensively monitor and evaluate the yield, quality, pest and disease resistance, and economic efficiency of each rice variety. Based on this, suitable varieties will be selected and recommended for large-scale production in subsequent seasons.

According to Bui Phuoc Trang, head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, this year's winter-spring crop saw the province planting over 55,500 hectares of rice, with high-quality main varieties accounting for about 70%, processing rice varieties about 20%, and new rice varieties about 10%...

“The QC03, QC11, HD16, and KH805 rice varieties are currently undergoing production evaluation trials, initially showing high yields and output, and resistance to adverse weather conditions. In the coming time, the sub-department will disseminate information to farmers on organizing the production of these new rice varieties, ensuring adherence to proper technical procedures…,” Mr. Bui Phuoc Trang shared.
