Effectiveness of the SACCR Project in Ea Kar

After more than 3 years of implementation, the project "Strengthening the resilience of small-scale agriculture to water security due to climate change in the Central Highlands and South Central regions" (SACCR Project) has helped many households in Ea Kar district to produce sustainable agriculture and adapt to climate change.

As one of the families in Ea Sar commune benefiting from the project, Ms. Le Thi Cuc (village 6) said that her family has 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of lychee trees planted since 2016.

Previously, due to a lack of expertise in cultivation techniques, the orchard developed slowly. Since the project was implemented in the locality, Ms. Cúc's family has received support in the form of fertilizers and biological pesticides (worth 5 million VND per application), and guidance on cultivation techniques. In 2024, Ms. Cúc's lychee orchard was selected as a model farm.

“Thanks to the support from the project, my family's lychee orchard is thriving, with high yields and quality. This year's lychee harvest yielded 3 tons of fruit, with an average selling price of 22,000 VND/kg. After deducting all expenses, my family earned a profit of about 40 million VND,” Ms. Cúc shared.

In previous years, during the dry season, Mr. Y Blop Nie (Ea Puk hamlet, Ea So commune) was always worried about the lack of irrigation water for his 1-hectare cocoa plantation. At the beginning of 2024, his family, along with two other households, received support from a project to dig a new pond, covering an area of 414 square meters and with a storage capacity of approximately 1,200 cubic meters, worth about 100 million VND. Since having the pond, the problem of water shortage for production has been solved for Mr. Y Blop's family and the two other households.

In early March 2025, the family of Ms. Nong Thi Huyen (Thanh Phong village, Xuan Phu commune) also received support from the project in the form of materials for a water-saving irrigation system worth 3.9 million VND to install in their strawberry garden, which covers more than 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters). The irrigation system not only saves Ms. Huyen time but also significantly reduces the amount of water used compared to the previous method.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Nam, Deputy Director of the SACCR Dak Lak Project Management Board, informed that the SACCR Project, funded by the Green Climate Fund through the United Nations Development Programme, will be implemented in the province from 2022 to 2026. The project aims to enhance the resilience of 5,838 vulnerable smallholder farmers to water insecurity caused by climate change in Dak Lak province; the beneficiaries are poor households, near-poor households, ethnic minority households, and households where women are the main breadwinners, with cultivated land of 1 hectare or less. In Ea Kar district, three communes are included in the project area: Ea Sar, Ea So, and Xuan Phu.

From 2023 to the present, in these communes, the project has provided agricultural supplies to 890 households; water-saving irrigation equipment to 789 households; and supported the digging of 124 water storage ponds with a total cost of 12.5 billion VND.

In addition, the project organized training courses on land and biomass management using the field school method for 64 household groups with 1,730 households; and 20 training courses on water resource management and climate change resilience for 1,292 households.

The project has supported the equipping of people with knowledge and techniques for sustainable agricultural practices adapted to climate change, helping households save on production costs, gradually improving their family's economic life, and making a positive contribution to poverty reduction in the locality.
