Luis unexpectedly left Flamengo. |
The decision was made by the management immediately after the match, ending the short but trophy-filled reign of the former left-back. In an official statement, Flamengo confirmed that Luis, along with his two colleagues Ivan Palanco and Diogo Linhares, were leaving the club, and also thanked him and wished him success in his future endeavors.
The departure comes as Flamengo have had a disappointing start to the 2026 season. The Rossoneri lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and were defeated in the Copa Sudamericana by Lanus. This is considered a poor start, putting immense pressure on the coaching staff.
Luis left his position as head coach after 101 matches, achieving a win rate of 69.9% (63 wins, 23 draws, 15 losses). He also became one of the most successful coaches in the team's history, equaling Jorge Jesus and Flavio Costa with 5 titles, including the 2024 Brazilian National Cup, the 2025 Supercopa, the 2025 Carioca, the 2025 Libertadores, and the 2025 Brasileirao.
Flamengo was Luis's first coaching job after retiring. He started with the U17 team in 2024, then led the U20 team and was quickly promoted to the first team, replacing Tite. This rapid rise allowed him to win a series of titles in a short period of time.
However, the first two months of 2026 saw a decline in both performance and internal affairs. Declining results, declining fitness, and instability in the dressing room forced Flamengo's management to take action.
