Barca missed out on the treble. |
"I want to congratulate Inter. They played very well in both legs and I wish Inter the best of luck in the final in Munich," said Barca coach Hansi Flick at the press conference after the second leg of the Champions League semi-final on the morning of May 7th.
"In the second half, Barca were better but it wasn't enough. This is a hard defeat to swallow, but we have to get back on our feet. I think my players deserved to reach the final. They can be proud of what they showed," the German coach added.
"When you see the atmosphere of tonight's match, you want to go back. We have to accept the result. Inter's forwards are strong and experienced. We have a young team and need time to improve. My job is to make this team better and better, both offensively and defensively. Barca will be back next season and try to win the championship," the former Bayern coach declared.
Barca were just three minutes away from the final but Inter equalized 3-3, ultimately losing 3-4 in extra time. After two legs, the Catalan side lost 6-7. This defeat marked a 10-year trophy drought for Barca in continental competitions.
Contrary to coach Flick's disappointment, Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, who contributed to five goals (two goals, three assists) in the two semi-final legs, said: "An incredible series with 13 goals. I am very proud of my teammates. After the defeat two years ago, we are ready to win this trophy."
Meanwhile, Yann Sommer, the Man of the Match award winner of the second leg, shared: "I will miss the saves against Yamal. He was fantastic. I was lucky not to let him score. Many teams give up when they are 3-2 down in the final minutes, but we didn't. Everything went great."
