In the early hours of March 19th, Barcelona thrashed Newcastle 7-2 in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, securing their place in the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 8-3. Prior to this, manager Howe was expected to spring a surprise, as he was the first English manager to lead a team at Camp Nou since Gary Neville 10 years ago.

However, history repeated itself in the worst possible way. Coach Howe's result was no better than Neville's, suffering a humiliating defeat at Camp Nou. Thus, the two most recent English coaches to face Barcelona at Camp Nou both suffered terrible results.

In February 2016, Gary Neville, while managing Valencia, lost 0-7 to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. Ten years later, Howe and Newcastle United also conceded seven goals to their rivals.

In total, these two English managers conceded 14 goals in just two matches against Barcelona at the Catalan club's home stadium. After the match, manager Howe admitted complete defeat.

He shared: “Psychologically, conceding the third goal (2-3) was extremely frustrating. Right before halftime, and in the very last minute, it was very similar to what happened in the first leg. We should have gone into halftime feeling very good, with everything still possible.”

"But then they scored very quickly at the beginning of the second half. Psychologically, we couldn't recover our spirits after that moment. The second half was really difficult. It was a painful experience," the English coach admitted.
