Jordan 2-0 South Korea
The South Korean national team suffered a 0-2 defeat against Jordan in the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Cup. This result disappointed South Korean fans who had hoped their national team would win their first championship in 64 years.
The image of coach Jurgen Klinsmann smiling after the defeat further angered the South Korean public. At the same time, during the press conference, the coach affirmed that he would not resign.
" I'm not considering any action. I plan to go back to South Korea to analyze and discuss with the Korean Football Association the good and bad points ," said coach Klinsmann.
" The team needs to improve further with the goal of winning the World Cup in two and a half years. We have to overcome some difficult initial steps and there is still a lot of work ahead ."
Coach Klinsmann smiled after South Korea's defeat.
Regarding his smile after the match and shaking hands with the opponent, the German coach said: " I think congratulating a team that wins by a large margin is natural. For me, it's normal. If we don't smile, we will have different approaches. I was angry and sad, but I think we should show that attitude when congratulating the opponent ."
South Korean media were unhappy with Klinsmann's behavior. The Iplus newspaper ran the headline: " Klinsmann smiles after shocking defeat ."
" Klinsmann's attitude remained unchanged even after the disastrous match ," author Kim Hee-woong commented. " The head coach laughed again, seemingly unaware of the seriousness of the situation. At the moment when the players couldn't lift their feet from the ground due to disappointment, Klinsmann was laughing. That scene angered the fans ."
Since taking over the South Korean national team last March, Coach Klinsmann has received much criticism from the South Korean public. The media has criticized him for lacking tactical awareness and relying solely on the players' abilities. Furthermore, his remote work – from his home in the US – has also been controversial. When asked about his next destination, Coach Klinsmann stated that he would be going to South Korea.
