During a press conference held at the South Korean national team's headquarters in Zapopan, Mexico, on the evening of June 28th, the South Korean football legend confirmed his decision to step down as head coach just one day after the team was eliminated from the World Cup.
"Today, I am resigning as head coach of the South Korean national team. I sincerely apologize to those who have always loved and supported Korean football. We were unable to deliver the expected results, and all responsibility rests with me as head coach," Hong said.
At the 2026 World Cup , South Korea only earned 3 points after three group stage matches with one win and two losses, finishing third in Group A. The team failed to qualify for the next round as one of the best third-placed teams.

This is also the second time Coach Hong has failed to lead South Korea beyond the group stage of the World Cup. Previously, he coached the team at the 2014 World Cup but was also eliminated in the group stage. He is currently the only coach in history to have led the South Korean national team in two different World Cups.
Hong Myung-bo was reappointed in July 2024 with a contract extending until the 2027 Asian Cup. However, from the moment he took office, the decision by the Korea Football Association (KFA) was met with controversy. The coach selection process was criticized for a lack of transparency, as the KFA overlooked many foreign candidates to appoint Hong after a brief meeting with federation leaders.
The incident sparked such widespread protests that the South Korean National Assembly summoned Hong Myung-bo and other KFA leaders for questioning. The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism subsequently launched an investigation and requested that the KFA examine the responsibility of Chairman Chung Mong-gyu and several other senior officials involved in the head coach appointment process.
