In the context of increasingly deep international economic integration, intellectual property protection for agricultural products is no longer an incentive option, but has become a mandatory "passport" if localities want to increase value, expand markets and assert their competitive position. Grasping that trend, in recent times, Lao Cai province has promoted the construction and management of intellectual property for typical products, creating an important foundation for developing agriculture in a modern and sustainable direction.
To date, the province has more than 160 products granted protection certificates in the form of geographical indications, certification marks and collective marks. This is an impressive number, reflecting the strong participation of localities, cooperatives and the science and technology sector in establishing, preserving and promoting the value of local agricultural products.

In the group of geographical indications, many products have become prestigious brands such as Van Yen cinnamon, Muong Lo rice, Mu Cang Chai honey, Shan Phinh Ho tea...
In particular, geographical indications with indefinite validity such as Khau Tan Don sticky rice, Seng cu rice “Muong Khuong - Bat Xat”, Muong Lo rice and Van Yen cinnamon all possess outstanding quality, retain their characteristic flavor, opening up great prospects for consumption and export. Not only bringing economic value, geographical indications also contribute to identifying regional identity and enhancing the image of Lao Cai agricultural products in the market.
The group of certified brands currently accounts for a large number with 50 products, typically Bac Ha plums, Mu Cang Chai black-bone chickens, Muong Khuong pineapples, Thac Ba lake fish, Tram Tau upland taro, Lam Thuong ducks, etc.
Certification helps products fully comply with production processes and traceability, building reputation in the market, especially in supermarkets and e-commerce channels.

Mr. Le Xuan Thanh - Deputy Director of the Center for Science, Technology and Innovation of Lao Cai province commented: “Certified labels are an important tool to standardize production processes and enhance the reputation of agricultural products. When certified, products are consumed more conveniently, especially in trade promotion with large enterprises. This is an inevitable direction to increase added value”.
The most diverse is the group of collective trademarks with more than 90 products, ranging from rice wine, corn wine, dong vermicelli, Shan tea, specialty sticky rice, smoked meat, flowers, vegetables, black pigs, hill chickens, cold water fish... to community tourism services such as Khau Pha, Nghia Do. Many products have demonstrated clear economic efficiency after being granted protection.
In Muong Khuong, collective brands such as Muong Khuong yellow cow, Muong Khuong tangerine, Muong Khuong soybean, Muong Khuong black pig, and Muong Khuong sausage have become the fulcrum for expanding production scale.
Mr. Trang Trong Long, who has been making sausages for more than 20 years in Pho Cu village, shared: “Before there was no collective brand, it was very difficult for people’s products to compete. Now that there is a brand and standardized packaging, consumers trust them more and are no longer concerned about the origin, so consumption is more convenient and output has increased significantly.”
Many geographical indication products, certification marks and collective marks after being protected have been systematically managed and developed such as: Mu Cang Chai honey, Bat Do bamboo shoots, Tram Tau chili bamboo shoots... At the same time, the province is continuing to establish protection for potential products such as Ta Thanh tea, Muong Khuong peanuts, Y Ty tourism...
Building a brand is just the first step. More important is managing and maintaining quality according to standards. We are supporting localities to apply QR codes, electronic diaries, traceability, linking with OCOP and community tourism to enhance product value.
Mr. Le Xuan Thanh - Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Science, Technology and Innovation
At the same time, the province has implemented many synchronous solutions such as opening training classes, transferring techniques, supporting packaging, traceability stamps, building websites, putting products on e-commerce platforms... to help Lao Cai agricultural products keep up with the digital economic trend and expand the consumption market.

Not only bringing economic value, geographical indications also contribute to identifying regional identity and enhancing the image of Lao Cai agricultural products in the market.
In the coming time, Lao Cai aims for each commune to have at least one OCOP product with a collective or certified brand; expand production areas according to the chain, organic VietGAP; strengthen quality control, prevent counterfeit and fake goods and promote digital traceability.
Each brand is not only a "name", but also a commitment to quality, the pride of the people, the value of the product created by the hands and efforts of the ethnic people in the province.
With the support of management agencies and the efforts of enterprises, cooperatives and people, Lao Cai agricultural products are gradually affirming their position, reaching out and developing sustainably in domestic and international markets.
