The communes of Dan Hoa and Truong Son have long been known as areas facing many difficulties, with the majority of the population being ethnic minorities and a high percentage of poor and near-poor households. With the desire to improve income and raise the living standards of the people here, especially women, the project "Supporting Climate Change-Adapting Agricultural Livelihoods to Enhance the Role of Women in Difficult Communes," funded by KOICA, has been effectively implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Provincial Women's Union, and the Plan Office in Quang Tri.
The project will be implemented over a period of 3 years, from March 2025 to December 2027, with a total budget of over 19 billion VND, focusing on supporting ethnic minority women to improve their income through livelihood models adapted to climate change. At the same time, it aims to create conditions for women to participate more in the socio -economic life of their localities.
In 2025, the project will support livelihood models for 140 households with approaches such as: growing bamboo for shoots, raising hybrid chickens, and cultivating mushrooms. Households are provided with seedlings, livestock, auxiliary materials, and production process training with a "hands-on" approach. Initial results show clear effectiveness: 50 households are growing bamboo on 5 hectares, 80 households have built chicken coops to raise hybrid chickens with a total flock of over 5,600 birds, and 10 households are harvesting mushrooms. The production-consumption chain is well-organized, ensuring that participating households have guaranteed product sales, helping to reduce market risks and encouraging expansion of the model.

Ms. Ho Thi Danh from Truong Son commune happily shared: “Thanks to the attention of all levels of government and local authorities, in 2025, my family received support for a wood ear mushroom cultivation model. With the dedicated guidance of officials on mushroom cultivation and care techniques, my family has successfully developed the model. The mushrooms have been harvested, opening up a new livelihood for my family.”
To support ethnic minority women in improving their income and enhancing their status in the family and society, the Provincial Women's Union has actively implemented training courses on applying technology in production and processing; selling goods on e-commerce platforms; and supporting the development of brands and labels for several livelihood models and groups in the communes under Project 8. The Union has collaborated with the Peace Tree Vietnam (PTVN) organization to support the development of livelihood models for breeding goats for women in Lia and A Doi communes; and supported 10 toilet construction projects and pig farming models for 10 ethnic minority households in Dakrong commune… These models are gradually yielding results, contributing to improving the income of ethnic minority women in particular and ethnic minorities in general.
Through movements such as "Women excelling in economic activities" and "Helping poor women with specific needs," the Women's Union at all levels in the province has focused resources on supporting poor women and women in difficult circumstances to develop their economy and increase their income. The Union has encouraged ethnic minority women to boldly register and implement economic models suitable to their abilities and local conditions, while also providing support in terms of livestock, capital, and the transfer of scientific and technological advancements to them.
In addition, women's associations at all levels in the province have also focused on disseminating information and raising awareness among ethnic minority women, changing their mindset and practices. A notable example is Project 8, with models such as community communication groups, trusted community resources, and "Leaders of Change" clubs, contributing to changing mindsets and practices, eliminating outdated views in ethnic minority areas, promoting women's participation in labor and production, and enhancing women's economic empowerment.
According to Nguyen Thi Hong Ha, Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union, thanks to the coordinated support of relevant departments, units, and projects, the Provincial Women's Union has accompanied and helped ethnic minority women develop many diverse and effective economic models. Through this, women have demonstrated their role and position in the family and society; become more confident in investing capital and applying advanced science and technology to develop production and increase family income. In the future, the Union will continue to strengthen propaganda and training to raise awareness and capacity for ethnic minority women; support livelihood models; and create conditions for women to access preferential capital sources to boost production and business, increase income, and improve their lives.
