In the highland communes of western Quang Ngai province, the model of growing two rice crops per year is gradually changing the farming practices of ethnic minority communities, contributing to increased productivity and ensuring local food security.

Previously, according to traditional farming practices, many ethnic minority households in the highlands only planted one rice crop per year, resulting in low yields and food shortages during the lean season. In recent years, local authorities and the agricultural sector have provided support in terms of seeds, techniques, and guidance on planting schedules, helping people gradually expand to two rice crops per year.

In 2023, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center implemented a 2.5-hectare model of double-cropping rice cultivation using the Huong Chau 6 variety in Ngoc Linh commune. Thanks to the application of proper techniques and care, the yield reached 42 quintals/hectare. The initial success helped people gain confidence, and to date, the entire commune has developed approximately 660 hectares of double-cropping rice.

In Xop commune, many households with rice paddies in low-lying areas, which are favorable for moisture retention, have boldly participated in the two-crop rice model. Yields have increased, production is stable, contributing to ensuring food security for their families. This year, the locality has implemented over 600 hectares of two-crop rice; farmers are currently tending to the winter-spring crop and plan to continue planting the summer-autumn crop in May-June.

Local authorities regularly send officials to provide technical guidance on sowing, fertilizing, and pest control, helping people change their farming practices and proactively produce according to the seasons. In the future, the commune will continue to survey and expand high-quality rice varieties, gradually forming a commodity production area and increasing income for people in mountainous areas.

The two-crop rice model is proving effective in transforming agricultural production methods in the highlands, contributing to increasing the value of arable land and improving the lives of the local people.
