Hoanh Mo - A bright spot in the border area

From a commune with many difficulties, Hoanh Mo is now growing strongly, becoming a bright spot in the border area, both comprehensively developing in terms of economy and society, and being a solid fence protecting the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland.

Implementing the two-level local government model, after merging with Dong Van commune (old), Hoanh Mo currently has 22 villages with over 94% of ethnic minorities living. The commune has a 30.7km long border (from landmark 1305 to 1327) adjacent to Dong Trung town, Phong Thanh Cang area, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (China). Implementing Resolution 06-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on sustainable socio -economic development associated with ensuring national defense and security in border and island areas, period 2021-2025, in recent years, thanks to the attention of the Party, State and authorities at all levels, Hoanh Mo commune has had many remarkable changes. Infrastructure has been invested synchronously, people's lives have been constantly improved, the appearance of rural border areas has become more and more prosperous.

Trinh Tuong residential area (Bac Cuong village) is located close to the border, 10km from the commune center, formerly a particularly difficult area with 15 households and 70 people. Since 2023, the Provincial Veterans Association has invested in building a domestic water supply system, renovating the old school into a community center, concreting the village roads and repairing and rebuilding many dilapidated houses. These practical works help people stabilize their lives, feel secure in their attachment to the border, and become "living milestones" on the front line of the Fatherland.

Promoting the spirit of solidarity among ethnic groups, Hoanh Mo has well implemented the motto of "economic development associated with strengthening national defense and security". Economic models of agriculture - forestry, border trade and community tourism have been promoted, bringing practical results. From the beginning of 2025 up to now, the tourism sector has emerged as an important highlight, the commune has welcomed 77,500 visitors, including 1,250 international visitors through Hoanh Mo border gate, with revenue reaching nearly 50 billion VND. In particular, the commune has coordinated to welcome the first Vietnamese tourist group departing through Hoanh Mo border gate, an event marking an important step forward in the development of border tourism. Along with that, the locality is actively exploiting types of tourism with strengths such as: Eco-tourism, community tourism, discovery and experience tourism and border tourism...

From the provincial support funds and national target programs for the period 2021-2025, Hoanh Mo commune continues to synchronously implement socio-economic development projects in ethnic minority, mountainous and border areas associated with ensuring national defense and security. Regarding key projects that are being accelerated, such as: Renovation and upgrading of Loong Vai - Cao Ly route; Phac Che - Co Sen - Ngan Cam - Loong Vai route and infrastructure of Hoanh Mo - Dong Van border gate economic zone (phase 2).

According to Hoang Kien Trung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoanh Mo Commune, the commune has so far achieved 18/19 advanced new rural criteria, 2/6 model new rural criteria, and 16/22 villages have met new rural standards. The commune no longer has poor households, only 136 near-poor households, a sharp decrease compared to 2024. The local government has coordinated with the Bank for Social Policies and related units to support preferential loans, provide plant and animal breeds, and organize technical training to help people develop production and strive to escape poverty sustainably.

Along with economic development, the commune focuses on environmental protection, maintaining a forest cover rate of over 71%, ensuring 98.29% of solid waste is collected, 100% of medical waste is treated and the entire population uses clean water.

In the field of national defense and security, Hoanh Mo commune always proactively grasps the situation, strictly maintains combat readiness, ensures political security and social order and safety, and prevents sudden and unexpected situations from occurring. The militia and reserve forces are strengthened; these forces regularly coordinate with the Hoanh Mo Border Guard Station to patrol and protect the border and landmarks, strictly control entry and exit activities, and prevent violations. The management of the Hoanh Mo - Dong Van border gate economic zone has been strengthened, contributing to protecting sovereignty and maintaining national border security.

People-to-people diplomacy activities have also been promoted, contributing to strengthening the friendly and cooperative relationship between the people on both sides of the border. At the same time, information exchange has been maintained, effective coordination has been maintained in handling border-related issues, and border economic cooperation and friendly exchanges have been promoted.

With the outstanding results achieved, Hoanh Mo commune continues to affirm itself as a bright spot in the border region, developing stably and comprehensively, closely linking socio-economic development with strengthening national defense and security. Today's changes are vivid evidence of the will to rise up of the ethnic people and the resilient spirit of the people in the "fence" of the Fatherland.
