The tug of war performance of the

The tug of war performance of the "host" Long Bien ward is always attractive and receives enthusiastic cheers from the audience.

In the space of Tran Vu Temple - the famous temple worshiping Huyen Thien Tran Vu in Long Bien ward ( Hanoi ), on November 16, tug-of-war performances by tug-of-war communities from Korea and eight different localities of Vietnam created a very exciting atmosphere.

This activity is part of the exchange program between tug-of-war communities on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the tug-of-war ritual and game being recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage, organized by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports in coordination with the People's Committee of Long Bien Ward and the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association.

The performances help the public understand more about the cultural heritage values of the Tug of War ritual and game. The highlight is the community spirit, not emphasizing winning or losing, but associated with the ritual of praying for a good harvest, associated with customs related to the spiritual and cultural life of each locality.

Exciting performance by young people of Xuan Lai village (Da Phuc commune, Hanoi).

Each tug-of-war ritual and game performed has its own unique nuances. The tug-of-war ritual and game (Vinh Thanh commune, Phu Tho province) does not determine the winner or loser. Each tug-of-war “ket” can have several hundred participants, as long as everyone can hold onto a string several dozen meters long.

The tug-of-war ritual and game in Huu Chap (Kinh Bac ward, Bac Ninh province) is made from bamboo.

Meanwhile, the sitting tug of war in Ngoc Tri village (old), now in Long Bien ward, is famous for strong, shirtless young men pulling a large bamboo stick through a red wooden stake. This “competition” requires both strength and skillful coordination. In the sitting tug of war in Ngoc Tri village, if the Duong team wins, it means a bountiful harvest and favorable business…

Tug of war rituals and games are long-standing cultural practices, associated with the wet rice civilization of many Asian countries. In Vietnam, tug of war is widely present, from the Red River Delta to the northern mountains.

In 2015, UNESCO recognized the Tug of War rituals and games in Vietnam, Cambodia, Korea, and the Philippines as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Sharing about the significance of the tug-of-war exchange activity, Secretary of the Long Bien Ward Party Committee Nguyen Manh Ha emphasized: “In recent years, Long Bien Ward has made efforts to implement many solutions to preserve and promote heritage: Restoring traditional rituals, promoting communication, coordinating research to establish scientific records, focusing on educating the younger generation, and at the same time preserving the relic space associated with heritage such as the Tran Vu Temple - Cu Linh Pagoda - Ngoc Tri Communal House complex. Long Bien Ward is also the place where exchanges, ritual performances and tug-of-war games are held many times, with the participation of many domestic and international tug-of-war communities”.

This year's exchange program, performance of rituals and tug-of-war games marks a new development in cultural exchange when it brings together artisans and tug-of-war communities from Korea, Cambodia and the Philippines and eight typical tug-of-war communities of Vietnam, including: Sitting tug-of-war at Tran Vu temple (Long Bien ward, Hanoi), Xuan Lai mine tug-of-war (Da Phuc commune, Hanoi), Ngai Khe mine tug-of-war (Chieu My commune, Hanoi), Huong Canh river tug-of-war (Binh Nguyen commune, Phu Tho province), Huu Chap tug-of-war (Kinh Bac ward, Bac Ninh province), Tay people's tug-of-war (Bao Nhai commune, Lao Cai province), Hoa Loan tug-of-war (Vinh Thanh commune, Phu Tho province), Phu Hao village tug-of-war (Vi Khe ward, Ninh Binh province).

Besides, drum dance and lion dance performances by artists from Sehan University (Korea) created a vibrant cultural exchange atmosphere.

The program is not only a performance but also an open cultural forum where communities exchange and experience the richness and diversity of Vietnamese culture, while also learning from international friends about the experience of preserving intangible heritage.

The image of a tug-of-war rope stretched out in cheers is a strong message about community solidarity, the enduring vitality of heritage and the spirit of friendship between peoples.
