Hojlund helps Man Utd win their fifth consecutive game.

VnExpressVnExpress18/02/2024

Striker Rasmus Hojlund scored a brace, but Man Utd only managed a hard-fought 2-1 victory against hosts Luton Town in the 25th round of the Premier League.

It seemed as though Man Utd would win easily when Hojlund scored two goals within seven minutes, but the visitors' performance faltered and they conceded a goal. Luton's pressure led to players like Casemiro, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire receiving yellow cards in quick succession. After being substituted, the visitors played better but squandered many opportunities to extend their lead. The "Red Devils" also nearly dropped points in the final minute when midfielder Ross Barkley's header hit the crossbar.

After the final whistle blew, the victory was secured, and Hojlund shouted in the technical area. Since scoring his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa on December 26th, the 21-year-old striker has scored in six consecutive league matches, becoming the youngest player in history to achieve this feat.

The match then slipped out of the visitors' control, as players who received yellow cards were reluctant to engage in physical contact with opponents. Luton pushed their lines forward, applying pressure and preventing Man Utd from retaining possession. The visitors had to play defensively and counter-attack against the newly promoted team, only having 42% possession in the match. However, Luton failed to capitalize on their opportunities to score further goals.

Man Utd played better in the second half, creating at least three one-on-one opportunities, but Garnacho, defender Diogo Dalot, and captain Bruno Fernandes all failed to capitalize. They all tried to dribble past the goalkeeper, but without success. Fernandes once put the ball past the goalkeeper, but his shot was cleared by midfielder Sambi Lokonga before it could roll into the net.

This was a rare Premier League match where both teams had over 20 shots on goal. Luton could have earned a point in the final minute when midfielder Barkley headed the ball from a corner on the left, sending it towards the far corner but hitting the top of the crossbar. The former Chelsea midfielder clutched his head in disappointment, while manager Rob Edwards covered his face, his eyes tightly closed.

Manager Erik ten Hag breathed a sigh of relief afterwards, as Man Utd had won five consecutive matches, including a run of four in the Premier League. The visitors are now only three points behind Tottenham in fifth place, and five points behind the top four. There are likely to be five Champions League spots next season, so the "Red Devils" have a good chance if they maintain their winning streak. But if they don't improve their performance, they will face difficulties when they host Fulham in Round 26 on February 24th.
